Abstract
This disclosure relates to ester compounds derived from neo-alcohol, lubricating oil base stocks comprising such ester compounds, lubricating oil compositions comprising such ester compounds, and method for making such compounds and/or base stocks. The lubricating oil base stocks comprising the ester compounds exhibit desirable lubricating properties such as polarity and oxidation stability.
Claims25
A compound having a formula (F-I) below:
- wherein:
- R1 and R2 are independently each a hydrocarbyl group comprising at least 2 carbon atoms;
- and
- R3 is a substituted or unsubstituted hydrocarbyl group.
A lubricating oil composition comprising a compound having a formula (F-I) below:
- wherein:
- R1 and R2 are independently each a hydrocarbyl group comprising at least 2 carbon atoms;
- and
- R3 is a substituted or unsubstituted hydrocarbyl group.
A process for making an ester product comprising an ester compound having a formula (F-I) below:
- where R1 and R2 are independently each a hydrocarbyl group comprising at least two carbon atoms;
- and R3 is a substituted or unsubstituted hydrocarbyl group, the process comprising:
- (I) providing a neo-alcohol having a formula (F-II) below:
- where R1 and R2 are the same as the R1 and R2 in formula (F-I), respectively;
- (II) reacting the neo-alcohol with an acid having a formula (F-III) below:
- where R3 is the same as the R3 in formula (F-I), and/or an anhydride of the acid, in the presence of an acid catalyst to obtain a product mixture;
- and
- (III) obtaining the ester compound and/or the lubricating oil base stock from the product mixture.
