System and method of updating modules for application or content identification

A system for transitioning between traffic classification modules, the system comprising at least one processor and a memory storing processor-executable codes, the codes comprising a first collection of traffic-classification modules, a second collection of traffic-classification modules, and a traffic controller, wherein upon executing the processor-executable codes, the traffic controller being configured to:

• process a plurality of packets associated with a plurality of sessions by the first collection of traffic-classification modules;
• load the second collection of traffic-classification modules;
• receive one or more further packets flowing from a source network device to a destination network device, the one or more further packets being associated with one or more new sessions;
• process the one or more further packets associated with the one or more new sessions by the second collection of traffic-classification modules;
• unload the first collection of traffic-classification modules when no sessions of the plurality of sessions are associated with the first collection of traffic-classification modules;
• and
• store data associated with plurality of sessions and the one or more new sessions in a session table, the data including at least an intra-session persistent state, an intra-module persistent state, and a globally persistent state.

A system for transitioning between traffic classification modules, the system comprising at least one processor and a memory storing processor-executable codes, the codes comprising a first collection of traffic-classification modules, a second collection of traffic-classification modules, and a traffic controller, wherein upon executing the processor-executable codes, the traffic controller being configured to:

• process a plurality of packets associated with a plurality of sessions by the first collection of traffic-classification modules;
• load the second collection of traffic-classification modules;
• receive one or more further packets flowing from a source network device to a destination network device, the one or more further packets being associated with one or more new sessions;
• process the one or more further packets associated with the one or more new sessions by the second collection of traffic-classification modules;
• unload the first collection of traffic-classification modules when no sessions of the plurality of sessions are associated with the first collection of traffic-classification modules;
• store data associated with plurality of sessions and the one or more new sessions in a session table, the data including at least an intra-session persistent state, an intra-module persistent state, and a globally persistent state;
• switch, for each of the plurality of sessions that existed before the loading second collection of traffic-classification modules, from the first collection of traffic-classification modules to the second collection of traffic-classification modules, the switching including changing, in the session table, for the each of the plurality of sessions, a collection identification value associated with the first collection of traffic-classification modules to a collection identification value associated with the second collection of traffic-classification modules.
