Abstract
A window balance assembly may include a carrier, a spring element, and a mounting bracket. The spring element may include first and second portions. The first portion may be coupled to the carrier. The mounting bracket may engage the second portion of the spring element and may selectively engage the carrier.
Claims34
A window balance assembly comprising:
- a carrier having an upper end and a lower end;
- a curl spring at least partially disposed in the carrier;
- a mounting bracket disposed at the upper end of the carrier;
- and
- a receiver supported for rotation relative to the carrier about a first axis;
- wherein the carrier comprises a first housing portion and a second housing portion coupled to one another, at least one of the first housing portion and second housing portion including a recess intermediate the upper end and the lower end;
- wherein the receiver comprises a cam that is rotatable between a first position and a second position, and wherein rotation of the cam between the first and second positions changes an overall dimension of the window balance assembly;
- wherein the curl spring comprises a curled portion and an uncurled extension portion, wherein the curled portion of the curl spring is received in the recess and wherein the uncurled extension portion of the curl spring extends from a side of the carrier and engages the mounting bracket;
- wherein the mounting bracket comprises a single tab at a lower end of the mounting bracket for releasably engaging the carrier at the upper end of the carrier;
- wherein in an uninstalled configuration of the window balance assembly:
- the mounting bracket is releasably engaging the upper end of the carrier,
- a downward force of the curl spring on the mounting bracket retains the mounting bracket on the carrier, and
- the tab of the mounting bracket hooks the carrier to prevent the downward force of the curl spring from rotating the mounting bracket relative to the carrier about a second axis that is generally parallel to the first axis;
- and
- wherein while the tab is preventing rotation of the mounting bracket about the second axis, the tab does not prohibit relative twisting and sliding movement between the carrier and the mounting bracket to disengage the mounting bracket and the carrier from on another and allow movement between the carrier and the mounting bracket in a first direction along a third axis that extends through the upper and lower ends of the carrier and is perpendicular to the first axis.
12 more elements
A window balance assembly comprising:
- a carrier including an upper end and a lower end, the upper end having a first projection and a second projection extending therefrom, the carrier defining a recess disposed between the upper and lower ends;
- a receiver supported for rotation relative to the carrier;
- a mounting bracket releasably coupled to the carrier at the upper end in an uninstalled configuration, the mounting bracket contacting at least one of the first and second projections in the uninstalled configuration;
- and
- a spring including a curled portion and an uncurled portion, the curled portion received within the recess of the carrier, the uncurled portion extending from the carrier and engaging the mounting bracket;
- wherein, the mounting bracket is coupled to the carrier in the uninstalled configuration,
- wherein the mounting bracket includes a single tab hooking the carrier in the uninstalled configuration and preventing a downward force of the curl spring from rotating the mounting bracket relative to the carrier,
- wherein the tab does not prohibit relative twisting movement between the carrier and the mounting bracket to uncouple the mounting bracket from the carrier and allow movement of the carrier away from the mounting bracket in a first direction along a longitudinal axis of the carrier and perpendicular to an axis of rotation of the receiver,
- wherein in the uninstalled configuration, another portion of the mounting bracket contacts an upper surface of a projection extending from an upper end of the carrier,
- wherein the another portion of the mounting bracket has a shape that matches a shape of the upper surface of the projection.
7 more elements
A window balance assembly in an uninstalled configuration, the window balance assembly comprising:
- a carrier having an upper end and a lower end, the carrier including a first housing portion and a second housing portion coupled to one another, at least one of the first housing portion and second housing portion including a recess intermediate the upper end and the lower end;
- a curl spring at least partially disposed in the carrier, the curl spring including a curled portion and an uncurled extension portion, wherein the curled portion of the curl spring is received in the recess;
- a mounting bracket releasably engaging the upper end of the carrier, wherein the uncurled extension portion of the curl spring extends from a side of the carrier and engages the mounting bracket;
- and
- a receiver supported for rotation relative to the carrier;
- the receiver including a cam that is rotatable between a first position and a second position, wherein rotation of the cam between the first and second positions changes an overall dimension of the window balance assembly;
- wherein the mounting bracket comprises a tab releasably engaging the carrier;
- wherein a downward force of the curl spring on the mounting bracket retains the mounting bracket on the carrier,
- wherein the tab of the mounting bracket hooks the carrier,
- wherein another portion of the mounting bracket contacts a projection extending from an upper end of the carrier,
- wherein the portion of the mounting bracket has a shape that matches a shape of a surface of the projection,
- wherein engagement between the tab and the carrier and engagement between the portion of the mounting bracket and the projection cooperate to prevent the downward force of the curl spring from rotating the mounting bracket relative to the carrier;
- and
- wherein while the tab and the portion of the mounting bracket are preventing rotation of the mounting bracket, the tab and the portion of the mounting bracket do not prohibit relative twisting movement between the carrier and the mounting bracket to disengage the mounting bracket from the carrier, and allow movement between the carrier and the mounting bracket in a first direction perpendicular to an axis of rotation of the receiver.
