Abstract
A polymerizable system includes a curable composition and one or more encapsulated initiator particles. The curable composition can include one or more 1,1-disubstituted alkene compounds and the encapsulated initiator particles can include one or more polymerization initiators encapsulated by a cured composition. The cured composition includes one or more 1,1-disubstituted alkene compounds.
Claims18
An initiator particle comprising:
- a polymerization initiator substantially encapsulated by a cured composition comprising one or more 1,1-disubstituted alkene compounds;
- and
- a shell layer substantially encapsulating the cured composition;
- and
- wherein the polymerization initiator is capable of initiating polymerization of the one or more 1,1-disubstituted alkene compounds;
- and
- wherein the shell layer is formed from one or more of a urea formaldehyde resin;
- a polyvinyl alcohol;
- a gelatin;
- an acrylate;
- and a polyethylene wax.

A polymerizable system comprising:
- a first curable composition;
- a polymerization initiator substantially encapsulated by a second cured composition formed from at least one or more 1,1-disubstituted alkene monomers;
- and
- a shell layer substantially encapsulating the polymerization initiator and the second cured composition;
- and
- wherein the polymerization initiator is capable of initiating polymerization of the first curable composition and the 1,1-disubstituted alkene monomers of the second cured composition;
- and
- wherein the shell layer is formed from one or more of a urea formaldehyde resin;
- a polyvinyl alcohol;
- a gelatin;
- an acrylate;
- and a polyethylene wax.

A method of forming encapsulated initiator particles comprising:
- dispersing polymerization initiators in a medium, the polymerization initiators comprising spherical, non-spherical, irregular, angular, textured, or layered particles having an average granulometry of about 0.1 microns to about 1,000 microns;
- adding a polymerizable composition to the medium, the first polymerizable composition comprising one or more 1,1-disubstituted alkene compounds;
- and
- forming a shell layer around the polymerizable composition from one or more of a urea formaldehyde resin;
- a polyvinyl alcohol;
- a gelatin;
- an acrylate;
- and a polyethylene wax;
- and
- wherein the polymerizable composition polymerizes upon contact with the polymerization initiators.
