Abstract
Provided herein are methods and compositions for treating disease-states associated with presence of increased number of ErbB4+ pro-inflammatory macrophages in a subject in need thereof. The methods include providing an activator of ErbB4 and administering a therapeutically effective amount of the activator to the subject. The compositions include an activator of ErbB4. In one embodiment, the activation of ErbB4 is Neuregulin-4.
Claims12
A method for treating colitis and/or inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in a subject, comprising detecting an increased number of ErbB4+ pro-inflammatory macrophages relative to a reference value in the colon of the subject, and administering a therapeutically effective amount of neuregulin-4 to the subject so as to treat the colitis and/or the IBD in the subject, wherein the reference value is the mean or median number of ErbB4+ macrophages in a normal subject or the mean or median number of ErbB4+ macrophages in subjects that have been diagnosed and successfully treated for the colitis and/or the IBD.
