Abstract
The present invention provides methods and compositions for expanding T regulatory cells ex vivo or in vivo using one or more SAP agonists. The methods and compositions are useful in the treatment of autoimmune diseases and in preventing foreign graft rejection.

A method of increasing expression of IL-10 and the number of FoxP3+ cells in a patient having multiple sclerosis, the method comprising administering to the patient an amount of a serum amyloid P (SAP) protein comprising the amino acid sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO:
- 1 effective to increase the number of FoxP3+ cells in the patient.
