Abstract
Variable-scale, modular, easily manufacturable, energy efficient, reliable, and computer operated Insect Production Superstructure Systems (IPSS) may be used to produce insects for human and animal consumption, and for the extraction and use of lipids for applications involving medicine, nanotechnology, consumer products, and chemical production with minimal water, feedstock, and environmental impact. An IPSS may comprise modules including feedstock mixing, enhanced feedstock splitting, insect feeding, insect breeding, insect collection, insect grinding, pathogen removal, multifunctional flour mixing, and lipid extraction. An IPSS may be configured to be constructed out of a plurality of containerized modules.

A method to produce lipid-depleted insects, the method includes:
- (a) providing:
- a breeding material;
- and
- a source of egg-laying insects, the egg-laying insects are configured to lay eggs into the breeding material;
- (b) after step (a), introducing the breeding material to the egg-laying insects for the egg-laying insects to lay eggs into to produce an egg-laden breeding material, the egg-laden breeding material has a greater amount of eggs relative to the breeding material;
- (c) after step (b), incubating the egg-laden breeding material to form incubated egg-laden breeding material;
- (d) after step (c), hatching the eggs included within the incubated egg-laden breeding material to form hatched insects;
- (e) after step (d), growing the hatched insects;
- (f) after step (e), killing the hatched insects;
- and
- (g) after step (f), extracting lipids from the hatched insects to produce lipid-depleted insects, the lipid-depleted insects have a reduced amount of lipids relative to the hatched insects.
A liquid composition derived from insects, the composition includes an emulsion of water and insect lipids, wherein the insect lipids are comprised of linoleic acid, oleic acid, and stearic acid.
An intermediate product derived from lipids of insects, the intermediate product includes one or more products selected from the group consisting of glyceryl stearate, sorbitan stearate, stearyl alcohol, and TEA-stearate.
An enhanced feedstock comprised of insects, feedstock, vitamins, and minerals;
- wherein:
- (i) the insects are comprised of chitin;
- (ii) the feedstock includes plant matter;
- (iii) the vitamins include vitamin A and vitamin E;
- and
- (iv) the minerals include calcium and phosphorous;
- wherein:
- the enhanced feedstock includes:
- a calcium to enhanced feedstock ratio ranging from between 0.5 pounds of calcium per ton of enhanced feedstock to 250 pounds of calcium per ton of enhanced feedstock;
- and
- a phosphorous to enhanced feedstock ratio ranging from between 0.5 pounds of phosphorous per ton of enhanced feedstock to 250 pounds of phosphorous per ton of enhanced feedstock.
A method to kill hatched insects, the method includes:
- (a) providing:
- a breeding material;
- and
- a source of egg-laying insects, the egg-laying insects are configured to lay eggs into the breeding material;
- (b) after step (a), introducing the breeding material to the egg-laying insects for the egg-laying insects to lay eggs into to produce an egg-laden breeding material, the egg-laden breeding material has a greater amount of eggs relative to the breeding material;
- (c) after step (b), incubating the egg-laden breeding material to form incubated egg-laden breeding material;
- (d) after step (c), hatching the eggs included within the incubated egg-laden breeding material to form hatched insects;
- (e) after step (d), growing the hatched insects;
- and
- (f) after step (e), killing the hatched insects.
A method to grow hatched insects, the method includes:
- (a) providing:
- a breeding material;
- and
- a source of egg-laying insects, the egg-laying insects are configured to lay eggs into the breeding material;
- (b) after step (a), introducing the breeding material to the egg-laying insects for the egg-laying insects to lay eggs into to produce an egg-laden breeding material, the egg-laden breeding material has a greater amount of eggs relative to the breeding material;
- (c) after step (b), incubating the egg-laden breeding material to form incubated egg-laden breeding material;
- (d) after step (c), hatching the eggs included within the incubated egg-laden breeding material to form hatched insects;
- and
- (e) after step (d), growing the hatched insects.
