Abstract
A getter element includes a getter material reactive with a fission product contained within a stream of liquid and/or gas exiting a fuel assembly of a nuclear reactor. At least one transmission pathway passes through the getter element that is sufficiently sized to maintain a flow of the input stream through the getter element at above a selected flow level. At least one transmission pathway includes a reaction surface area sufficient to uptake a pre-identified quantity of the fission product.
Claims19
A method of forming a getter element comprising:
- determining an expected amount of fission product contained within a fluid flow of a nuclear fission reactor core over a selected period of time of operation of the nuclear fission reactor;
- identifying an expected amount of reaction product to be formed in a chemical reaction between the expected amount of the fission product and a getter material, the chemical reaction occurring over the selected period of time of operation of the nuclear fission reactor;
- determining a volume parameter of a getter process mixture including the getter material and based on the expected amount of the fission product and the expected amount of reaction product;
- and
- mixing the getter material and a plurality of void-forming structures to form the getter process mixture;
- and
- removing the plurality of void-forming structures from the getter process mixture to form a getter body with a void structure, the void structure based at least in part on the volume parameter and forming at least one through-channel through the getter body.
