Environmental map generation from a digital image

In a digital medium environment to generate an environmental map of a digital image, a method implemented by a computing device, the method comprising:

• scaling, by the computing device, the digital image using a content aware scaling technique;
• generating, by the computing device, a canvas that is dimensionally larger than the digital image;
• inserting, by the computing device, the digital image scaled using the content aware scaling technique within the canvas;
• and
• generating, by the computing device, the environmental map of the digital image based on the canvas, the environmental map encoding light information of the digital image.

In a digital medium environment to generate an environmental map of a digital image, a system comprising:

• means for receiving a canvas having a digital image inserted therein;
• means for forming at least one polar coordinate canvas by transforming original coordinates of the canvas into polar coordinates;
• means for filling a portion of the at least one polar coordinate canvas using a content-aware fill technique;
• and
• means for generating an environmental map of the digital image by transforming the polar coordinates of the at least one polar coordinate canvas having the portion filled using the content-aware fill technique back into original coordinates.
