Abstract
The present invention relates to new transporter polypeptides, and genes encoding therefor, which can be used to confer upon a plant resistance to one or more biotrophic fungal pathogens.
Claims18
A transgenic plant which has integrated into its genome a transgene comprising an exogenous polynucleotide encoding an Lr67 polypeptide which comprises amino acids having a sequence at least 90% identical to the amino acid sequence of any one or more of SEQ ID NO:1, SEQ ID NO:7, SEQ ID NO:8 or SEQ ID NO:9, wherein the Lr67 polypeptide does not comprise a glycine at a position corresponding to amino acid number 144 of SEQ ID NO:1, and wherein the polynucleotide is operably linked to a promoter capable of directing expression of the polynucleotide in a cell of the plant.
A process for determining whether a polypeptide confers resistance or susceptibility to one or more biotrophic fungal pathogen(s), comprising:
- i) obtaining a polynucleotide operably linked to a promoter, the polynucleotide encoding an Lr67 polypeptide which comprises amino acids having a sequence at least 90% identical to the amino acid sequence of any one or more of SEQ ID NO:1, SEQ ID NO:7, SEQ ID NO:8 or SEQ ID NO:9, wherein the Lr67 polypeptide does not comprise a glycine at a position corresponding to amino acid number 144 of SEQ ID NO:1,
- ii) introducing the polynucleotide into a plant,
- iii) determining whether the level of resistance or susceptibility to the one or more biotrophic fungal pathogen(s), is increased or decreased relative to an isogenic plant lacking the polynucleotide, and
- iv) optionally, if the level of resistance or susceptibility is increased, selecting a polynucleotide encoding the polypeptide which when expressed confers resistance or susceptibility to the one or more biotrophic fungal pathogen(s).
