Abstract
Graphene oxide (GO) is an emerging material for energy, environmental, and many other applications which in the past has been produced using chemical processes involving high-energy consumption and hazardous chemicals. Embodiments of the present invention focus on bioelectrochemical systems (BES) having microorganism(s), an anode (11) and cathode (14) to produce GO (13) from graphite, coal, and other carbonaceous materials under ambient conditions without chemical amendments. In some embodiments, value-added organic compounds (17) and even H2 (16) can be produced.
Claims22
A bioelectrochemical method for producing graphene oxide comprising the steps of:
- providing at least one biochemical reactor;
- providing at least one graphite containing anode and at least one cathode in each of said at least one biochemical reactor;
- wherein said at least one cathode comprises a conductive material;
- connecting a load between said at least one graphite containing anode and said at least one cathode with a transmission line;
- providing at least one direct current electricity source connected to said transmission line;
- providing at least one microbial population in each of said at least one biochemical reactor;
- interacting said at least one graphite containing anode with said at least one microbial population resulting in production of graphene oxide, carbon dioxide (CO2) and electrons;
- transferring said electrons from said at least one graphite containing anode to said at least one cathode via said transmission line;
- microbiologically reducing protons and said carbon dioxide (CO2) at said at least one cathode resulting in production of H2 and organic compounds;
- and
- collecting said graphene oxide from said at least one biochemical reactor.
