Abstract
A ply for fabricating composite material which includes a first tow including a plurality of fibers spread in a direction along a width of a cross section of the ply. A first sheet of enhancement performance material extends within the plurality of fibers and between a top and a bottom of the cross section of the ply.
Claims20
A ply for fabricating composite material, comprising:
- a first single tow of fibers wherein the first single tow is spread in a direction along a width of a cross section of the ply;
- a second single tow of fibers wherein the second single tow is spread in a direction along the width of the cross section of the ply, wherein the first and second single tows extend along the width of the cross section of the ply aligned with one another extending along the width of the cross section of the ply;
- and
- a first sheet of enhanced performance material extends along the width of the cross section of the ply, wherein:
- the first sheet of enhanced performance material comprises structural fibers in a mat configuration which include one of a glass, carbon or inorganic material;
- the first sheet of enhanced performance material is configured to have a corrugated shape wherein the corrugated shape provides successive recesses positioned across the width of the cross section of the ply;
- the first single tow fills a first recess and the second single tow fills a second recess positioned adjacent to the first recess and
- the ply has a thickness of seventy-five ten thousands of an inch (0.0075 inch).

A ply for fabricating composite material, comprising:
- a first sub-layer comprises a first sheet of an enhanced performance material having a corrugated shape which extends along a width of a cross section of the ply wherein:
- a recess of the corrugated shape of the first sheet of the enhanced performance material contains fibers:
- and
- the recess has a length;
- and
- a second sub-layer positioned adjacent to the first sub-layer, the second sub-layer extends along the width of the cross section of the ply and the second sub-layer comprises a second sheet of an enhanced performance material having a corrugated shape, wherein;
- a recess of the corrugated shape of the of the second sheet of the enhanced performance material contains fibers along the width of the cross section of the ply;
- the recess of the second sub-layer has a length greater than the length of the recess within the first sub-layer with an opening of the recess of the second sheet of enhanced performance material of the second sub-layer facing an opening of the recess of the first sheet of enhanced performance material of the first sub-layer and the opening of the recess of the first sub-layer aligns with the recess of the opening of the recess of the second sheet of enhanced material of the second sub-layer;
- the opening of the recess of the second sheet of the enhanced performance material extends beyond opposing sides of the opening of the recess of the first sheet of the enhanced performance material of the first sub-layer, which extends along the width of the cross section of the ply;
- and
- a third sheet of enhanced performance material is positioned between the first sub-layer and the second sub-layer such that the third sheet of enhanced performance material extends across the width of the cross section of the ply and contacts the first sheet of enhanced performance material and the second sheet of enhanced performance material.

A ply for fabricating a composite material, comprising:
- a first sub-layer extends along a width of a cross section of the ply comprising a first sheet of enhanced performance material configured in a corrugated shape which defines at least two recesses in succession with one another, wherein:
- the first sheet of enhanced performance material of the first sub-layer extends across the width of the cross section of the ply;
- a first single tow of plurality of fibers is positioned within and fills a first recess of the at least two recesses in succession with one another;
- a second single tow of plurality of fibers is positioned within and fills a second recess adjacent the first recess of the at least two recesses in succession with one another;
- the first and second single tows extend along a width of the first sub-layer aligned with one another in the width of the cross section of the ply;
- and
- a second sub-layer extends along the width of the cross section of the ply comprising a first sheet of enhanced performance material configured in a corrugated shape which defines at least two recesses in succession with one another, wherein:
- the second sub-layer is positioned adjacent to and above the first sub-layer and the second sub-layer extends along the first sub-layer;
- the first sheet of enhanced performance material of the second sub-layer extends across the width of the cross section of the ply;
- a first single tow of plurality of fibers is positioned within and fills a first recess of the at least two recesses of the first sheet of the enhanced performance material of the second sub-layer;
- and
- a second single tow of plurality of fibers is positioned within and fills a second recess adjacent to the first recess of the at least two recesses of the first sheet of the enhanced performance material of the second sub-layer, wherein:
- a second sheet of enhanced performance material is located between the first and second sub-layers, wherein:
- the second sheet of enhanced performance material is located below and directly contacts the first sheet of enhanced performance material having the corrugated shape of the second sub-layer;
- and
- the second sheet of enhanced performance material is located above and directly contacts the first sheet of enhanced performance material having the corrugated shape of the first sub-layer;
- and
- an opening of the first recess of the first sheet of the enhanced performance material having the corrugated shape of the first sub-layer is aligned with and faces in the same direction as an opening of the first recess of the first sheet of enhanced performance material having the corrugated shape of the second sub-layer.
