Abstract
Articulation devices, systems, methods for articulation, and methods for fabricating articulation structures will often include simple balloon arrays, with inflation of the balloons interacting with elongate skeletal support structures so as to locally alter articulation of the skeleton. The skeleton may include a simple helical coil. Liquid inflation fluid may be directed to the balloons from an inflation fluid canister, and may vaporize within the articulation system, with the inflation system preferably including valves controlled by a processor. The articulation structures can be employed in minimally invasive medical catheter systems.
Claims7
A structural heart therapy catheter comprising:
- a helical skeleton structure having a proximal end, a distal end, and an axis therebetween, the distal end configured for insertion into a patient;
- an array of balloons supported by the helical skeleton structure, the array of balloons distributed axially and circumferentially about the skeleton;
- a therapeutic tool supported by the helical skeleton structure and configured for use when in alignment with native tissue of a heart valve in a patient;
- a fluid supply system in fluid communication with the balloons, the fluid supply system including a plurality of channels, each channel in fluid communication with an associated subset of the balloons, each subset of balloons comprising a plurality of the balloons, the fluid supply system comprising a plurality of valves and configured to selectively inflate any of the subsets of the balloons so as to selectively alter a shape of the helical skeleton structure;
- and
- a processor coupled with the valves, the processor configured to induce movement of the tool into alignment with the native tissue.
A method comprising:
- selectively inflating a first subset of balloons, the first subset of balloons included in an array of balloons supported by a helical skeleton, the array distributed axially and circumferentially about the skeleton, the inflation of the first subset of balloons inducing a first change in the shape of the helical skeleton;
- selectively inflating a second subset of balloons, the second subset of balloons included in the array of balloons, the inflation of the second subset of balloons inducing a second change in shape of the helical skeleton, wherein the second change in shape of the helical skeleton is different from the first change in shape of helical skeleton;
- wherein the array of balloons and the helical skeleton are included in a structural heart therapy catheter, and wherein the selective inflating of the first subset of balloons and the selective inflating of the second subset of balloons are performed so as to move a therapeutic tool carried by the structural heart catheter into alignment with native tissue of a heart valve in a patient.
