Abstract
Disclosed herein are compositions for use in an energy providing devices and methods of preparing such devices. Also included herein is energy providing devices that comprise a charged compound modified substrate or zwitterion-modified substrate or energy providing devices that comprise an electrolyte that comprises a perhalogenatedphenyl azide charged or zwitterionic compound.
Claims19
An energy providing device comprising a charged compound modified substrate or zwitterion-modified substrate, wherein the charged compound modified substrate or zwitterion-modified substrate comprises a compound that has the structure of Formula I:
- wherein
- A is selected from —C(═O)— and —(SO2)—;
- L is selected from —OQ, —O−, —N+R3HQ and —NR3Q;
- Q is a structure represented by a formula:
- Z is selected from —CR6aR6b—, —C(═O)—, —C(═NH)—, and —C(═NH)NR7—;
- m is an integer selected from 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8;
- each of R1a and R1b is independently selected from hydrogen and halogen;
- each of R2a and R2b is halogen;
- R3, when present, is selected from hydrogen and C1-C4 alkyl;
- each of R4a and R4b, when present, is independently selected from hydrogen, halogen, —CN, —OH, —NR8aR8b, —NR8aR8bH+, C1-C4 alkyl, C1-C4 monohaloalkyl, C1-C4 polyhaloalkyl, —SO3−, —SO3R9, —CO2−, and —CO2R9;
- each of R5a, R5b, and R5c is independently selected from hydrogen, halogen, —CN, —OH, —NR10aR10b, —NR10aR10bR10c+, C1-C4 alkyl, C1-C4 monohaloalkyl, C1-C4 polyhaloalkyl, —SO3−, —SO3R11, —CO2−, and —CO2R11;
- each of R6a and R6b, when present, is independently selected from hydrogen, halogen, —CN, —OH, —NR12aR12b, —NR12aR12bH+, C1-C4 alkyl, C1-C4 monohaloalkyl, C1-C4 polyhaloalkyl, —SO3−, —SO3R13, —CO2−, and —CO2R13;
- R7, when present, is selected from hydrogen and C1-C4 alkyl;

- provided that the compound is charged or zwitterionic.
A method of preparing a charged compound modified substrate or zwitterion modified substrate comprising:
- a) contacting a substrate with an alcohol for a time sufficient for the alcohol to saturate the substrate;
- b) incubating the saturated substrate with a solution comprising a charged or zwitterionic compound for at least 30 seconds;
- and
- c) exposing the substrate of step b) under a light source for at least 30 seconds, thereby generating the charged compound modified substrate or zwitterion modified substrate.
A charged or zwitterionic compound that has the structure of Formula IIa of Formula IIb:
- wherein
- A is selected from —C(═O)— and —(SO2)—;
- each of R1a and R1b is independently selected from hydrogen and halogen;
- each of R2a and R2b is halogen;
- R3 is selected from hydrogen and C1-C4 alkyl;
- R10a and R10b are independently selected from C1-C4 alkyl;
- and
- R10c is selected from C1-C4 alkyl, —(C1-C8alkylene)SO3−, —(C1-C8alkylene)SO3H, —(C1-C8alkylene)CO2−, and —(C1-C8alkylene)CO2H.
