## Abstract

A method of modifying the amount of at least one biochemical component in a plant comprising expressing Qua-Quine Starch (QQS) in the plant, the wild-type of which does not express QQS; a transgenic plant, or part thereof, which comprises and expresses QQS as a transgene and in which the amount of at least one biochemical component is modified; a tissue culture of regenerable cells of the transgenic plant; a vector comprising a nucleotide sequence, which encodes the coding sequence of QQS, operably linked to a non-native promoter, which promotes expression of the nucleotide sequence in a plant, which is other than Arabidopsis; and a method of producing a food or industrial product from a plant.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method of producing a food product with increased protein content comprising:
(a) obtaining a transgenic plant or a transgenic part thereof, wherein the transgenic plant or the transgenic part thereof is transformed with a polynucleotide, which encodes an Arabidopsis Qua-Quine Starch (QQS) polypeptide, operably linked to a non-native promoter that expresses the QQS polypeptide in the transgenic plant or the transgenic part thereof;
(b) selecting the transgenic plant or the transgenic part thereof with increased total protein content compared to the total protein content in a corresponding wild-type (WT) plant or a corresponding WT part thereof that does not comprise and express the polynucleotide, which encodes the Arabidopsis QQS polypeptide, operably linked to the non-native promoter; and
(c) preparing the food product from the transgenic plant or the transgenic part thereof with increased total protein content,
whereupon the food product with increased protein content is produced.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the transgenic plant is a crop plant.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The method of claim 2, wherein the crop plant is a cereal crop.

### Claim 4 (depends on 3)

The method of claim 3, wherein the cereal crop is corn.

### Claim 5 (depends on 3)

The method of claim 3, wherein the cereal crop is rice.

### Claim 6 (depends on 2)

The method of claim 2, wherein the crop plant is soybean.
