Abstract
Some computing devices have limited resources such as, for example, battery power. When a user ceases to interact with an application, execution of the application can be moved to background and the application can be paused. During the time period in which the application is paused, the application consumes no CPU cycles because executing managed threads of the paused application are stopped, and native threads are prevented from running using asynchronous procedure calls.
Claims20
A system comprising:
- a memory;
- and
- one or more processors coupled to the memory, the one or more processors configured to:
- queue an asynchronous procedure call to a thread that is in a wait state based at least in part on an application to which the thread belongs being paused, the asynchronous procedure call being queued indicating that the thread is to call a function associated with the asynchronous procedure call;
- and
- block the function in response to the thread calling the function until the application is resumed to reduce consumption of one or more resources of the system.
A method comprising:
- queuing an asynchronous procedure call to a thread that is in a wait state based at least in part on an application to which the thread belongs being paused, wherein queuing the asynchronous procedure call indicates that the thread is to call a function associated with the asynchronous procedure call;
- and
- blocking the function in response to the thread calling the function until the application is resumed to reduce consumption of one or more resources of a system that is configured to execute the application.
A computer-readable storage medium comprising computer-executable instructions which when executed cause at least one processor of a computing device to:
- queue an asynchronous procedure call to a thread that is in a wait state based at least in part on an application to which the thread belongs being paused, the asynchronous procedure call being queued indicating that the thread is to call a function associated with the asynchronous procedure call;
- and
- block the function in response to the thread calling the function until the application is resumed to reduce consumption of one or more resources of the computing device.
