Described herein are mutant cyanobacterial cell populations that have a smaller mean cell length than wild type cyanobacterial cell populations of the same species.

A cyanobacterial population comprising cells with at least one expression cassette comprising a heterologous promoter operably linked to a nucleic acid segment encoding a Cdv3 protein with a sequence comprising at least 95% sequence identity to SEQ ID NO:33.
