An engineered polynucleotide encoding an engineered polypeptide capable of converting 1-(3-hydroxyphenyl)-2-(methylamino)ethanone to (R)-phenylephrine, wherein the amino acid sequence of the engineered polypeptide has at least 95% identity to SEQ ID NO:
- 4 and comprises the residue difference C190G and at least one further residue difference at a position of SEQ ID NO:
- 4 selected from a position corresponding to position 2, 11, 64, 76, 95, 99, 148, 152, 153, 159, 197, 200, 202, 206, and 249.
