Abstract
An air cleaner arrangement or assembly is provided. The air cleaner arrangement includes a serviceable filter cartridge. The air cleaner assembly also includes an arrangement for positioning the filter cartridge into a preferred, sealing, orientation and for securing the filter cartridge in that location. Preferred serviceable filter cartridges are provided, as well as methods of assembly and use.
Claims34
An air cleaner arrangement comprising:
- (a) a housing having an air inlet, an air outlet, and an interior region, wherein:
- (i) the housing comprises a first side wall, an opposite second side wall, a bottom wall, and an opposite top wall, wherein the top wall comprises an access cover;
- (ii) the housing including a housing seal surface extending around a periphery of the air outlet;
- (b) a filter cartridge located within the interior region of the housing and sized to pass through an opening in the housing provided when the access cover moves from a closed position to an open position, the filter cartridge comprising:
- (i) a media construction having an inlet flow end and an opposite outlet flow end, and having a rectangular cross-section;
- (ii) a seal member engaging the housing seal surface and providing a seal between the filter cartridge and the housing when the filter cartridge is biased in an axial direction away from the housing air inlet;
- (iii) a sheath construction around the media construction and having a first side wall, a second side wall, a bottom wall, a top wall, and a seal support supporting the seal member;
- (iv) a first projection arrangement from the first wall of the sheath and including a radially extending portion that extends in a line along a length of the first wall between the bottom wall and the top wall of the sheath;
- (v) a second projection arrangement from the second wall of the sheath and including a radially extending portion that extends in a line along a length of the second wall between the bottom wall and the top wall of the sheath;
- (vi) a handle arrangement extending from the top wall of the sheath construction;
- and
- (c) wherein the air cleaner is constructed so that, when the access cover is provided in the closed position, the filter cartridge is biased in the axial direction forming the seal between the seal member and the housing seal surface, and the filter cartridge is unable to back out of the seal formed between the seal member and the housing seal surface until the access cover is moved to the open position.

An air filter cartridge comprising:
- (a) a media construction having an inlet flow end and an opposite outlet flow end, and having a rectangular cross-section;
- (b) a seal member constructed to engage a housing seal surface of an air cleaner and providing a seal between the filter cartridge and the housing, wherein the seal member is not located around the media construction;
- (c) a molded plastic sheath construction around the media construction and having a first side wall, a second side wall, a bottom wall, a top wall, and a seal support flange constructed to support the seal member, wherein the seal support flange extends from the first side wall, the second side wall, the bottom wall, and the top wall at a location adjacent the media construction outlet flow end;
- (d) a first projection arrangement integral with the first wall of the sheath and including a radially extending portion that extends in a line along a length of the first wall between the bottom wall and the top wall of the sheath;
- (e) a second projection arrangement integral with the second wall of the sheath and including a radially extending portion that extends in a line along a length of the second wall between the bottom wall and the top wall of the sheath;
- and
- (f) a handle arrangement extending from the top wall of the sheath construction.
