Abstract
A method, electrical tissue stimulation system, and programmer for providing therapy to a patient are provided. Electrodes are placed adjacent tissue (e.g., spinal cord tissue) of the patient, electrical stimulation energy is delivered from the electrodes to the tissue in accordance with a defined waveform, and a pulse shape of the defined waveform is modified, thereby changing the characteristics of the electrical stimulation energy delivered from the electrode(s) to the tissue. The pulse shape may be modified by selecting one of a plurality of different pulse shape types or by adjusting a time constant of the pulse shape.

A system for providing a spinal cord stimulation (SCS) therapy or for providing a deep brain stimulation (DBS) therapy, comprising:
- one or more electrical terminals configured to be coupled to one or more stimulation leads that include a plurality of electrodes, wherein the one or more stimulation leads includes one or more SCS leads configured for use in delivering the SCS therapy or one or more DBS leads configured for use in delivering the DBS therapy;
- output stimulation circuitry configured to output neurostimulation, for the SCS therapy delivered by the one or more SCS leads or for the DBS therapy delivered by the one or more DBS leads, by outputting a temporal series of electrical waveforms that include waveforms having different waveform shape types through a channel to the one or more electrical terminals in accordance with a programmed set of stimulation parameters defining the temporal series of electrical waveforms to be output through the channel, wherein the programmed set of stimulation parameters include:
- electrode parameter combinations to define whether individual ones of the plurality of electrodes are anodic, cathodic or off;
- electrical parameters to define the waveforms within the temporal series of electrical waveforms that have different waveform shape types to be output through the channel;
- a user interface including a display screen configured for presenting to a user a plurality of different waveform shape types available for selection for inclusion in the temporal series of electrical waveforms through the channel to the one or more electrical terminals, and for receiving user selections of the different waveform shape types from the plurality of different waveform shape types for inclusion in the temporal series of electrical waveforms to be output through the channel;
