Abstract
The present invention relates to ophthalmic compositions and methods for the treatment of dry eye and other inflammatory ocular conditions. In particular, the present invention relates to a composition comprising an esterified anti-inflammatory lipid mediator, which is an ester of an anti-inflammatory lipid mediator that is a reaction product of the anti-inflammatory lipid mediator and a polyol wherein the majority of the anti-inflammatory lipid mediator is present in an ester form. In this way, the compositions are substantially free of an acid form of the anti-inflammatory lipid mediators. This composition can be topically delivered to the ocular surface via a preparation, solution, gel, ointment, and/or strip and/or a contact lens.
Claims6
An ophthalmic device for treatment of ocular conditions, the ophthalmic device comprising:
- a contact lens;
- and
- a composition incorporated into or loaded onto the contact lens, the composition comprising a phospholipid of general formula:
- wherein R1, R2 and R3 are, independently, alpha-linolenic acid, an omega 6 fatty acid, an omega 3 fatty acid other than alpha-linolenic acid, a hydrogen, or a substituted or unsubstituted phosphate group, provided that at least one of R1, R2 and R3 is a substituted or unsubstituted phosphate group and at least one of the remaining R1, R2 and R3 is alpha-linolenic acid;
- wherein the composition is suitable for administration to the eye or ocular environment and is substantially free from an acid form of the anti-inflammatory lipid mediator.
