Abstract
A versatile orthopedic device is arranged to convert between ligament and osteoarthritis treatment, and to accommodate a variety of leg anatomies. The orthopedic device is preferably configured as a double-upright brace indicating struts, frame component sections and associated hinges preferably intended to be along both medial and lateral sides of a wearer's leg. A strap kit with an unloading strap system may be added to the orthopedic device for conversion into an orthopedic device for osteoarthritis relief.
Claims17
A versatile orthopedic device, comprising:
- a first frame component defining first and second sides having first and second extensions, respectively, and a center section spanning between the first and second extensions, the first and second extensions oriented at an angle less than 90 degrees, relative to the center section, in a pre-contouring condition;
- a first strut securing to and overlapping the first extension of the first frame component and securing to a first hinge, the first strut forming a first end contoured within a width of the first extension and a second end forming a gear profile, the first strut defining an elongate slot extending from the first end toward the second end, a combined thickness of the first frame component and the first strut is about or less than 10 millimeters, the first strut formed from a same thickness from the first end to the second end;
- a second frame component;
- the first hinge having a polycentric configuration and connecting the first and second frame components, the second frame component having an end portion forming a gear profile, each of the end portion of the second frame component and the second end of the first strut having an aperture extending therethrough, the gear profiles of the first strut and the second frame component engaging with one another, the first hinge including at least one plate extending over both end portions of the first strut and the second frame component, and first and second fasteners extending through the at least one plate and the aperture of the first strut and the aperture of the second frame component, respectively;
- wherein the first frame component is adjustable in height along both of the first and second sides between the first hinge and the center section;
- wherein a distance between a center line of the first frame component and an inner corner defined at an intersection of the center section and one of the first and second extensions is greater than a length of the first and second extensions defined between the inner corner and a distal end of the extension;
- wherein the versatile orthopedic device further comprises a first coupling part arranged to receive a first coupling fastener adapted to extend through the first strut and first extension and tighten against the first coupling part and the first extension with the first strut therebetween, the first strut slidable relative to the first frame component and the first coupling part when the first coupling fastener is loosened such that the first frame component and the first coupling part remain secured in a fixed position relative to one another, the first coupling part abutting directly against and over a flat inner surface of the first strut on and extending over a peripheral outer edge of the first extension, the peripheral outer edge defined by the width of the first extension;
- wherein the first coupling part defines a D-ring section adapted for receiving a strap and located at a first end of the first coupling part, and a head portion through which the first coupling fastener extends and located at a second end of the first coupling part, the head portion with a width less than a width of the first strut but greater than the elongate slot and having an elongate recessed portion oriented generally parallel to the elongate slot and at least one aperture within the elongate recessed portion;
- wherein the first coupling part defines a hinge portion between the D-ring section and the head portion formed from a material forming the first coupling part, the hinge portion is more flexible than the D-ring section and the head portion, the hinge portion corresponding to the peripheral outer edge of the first extension.
