Abstract
Laser waveguides, methods and systems for forming a laser waveguide are provided. The waveguide includes an inner cladding layer surrounding a central axis and a glass core surrounding and located outside of the inner cladding layer. The glass core includes a laser-active material. The waveguide includes an outer cladding layer surrounding and located outside of the glass core. The inner cladding, outer cladding and/or core may surround a hollow central channel or bore and may be annular in shape.
Claims21
A laser waveguide lasing medium comprising:
- an inner cladding layer surrounding a central axis;
- a glass core surrounding and located outside of the inner cladding layer, the glass core including a laser-active material;
- and
- an outer cladding layer surrounding and located outside of the glass core;
- wherein the inner cladding layer surrounds a hollow area that extends between opposing first and second ends along an entire length of the laser waveguide lasing medium.
A laser waveguide comprising:
- an inner cladding layer surrounding a hollow central bore that extends between opposing first and second ends along a length of the waveguide;
- a laser gain medium surrounding and located outside of the inner cladding layer, the laser gain medium comprising a glass material doped with a laser-active material;
- and
- an outer cladding layer surrounding and located outside of the laser gain medium;
- wherein an index of refraction of the inner cladding material is less than an index of refraction of the laser gain medium and an index of refraction of the outer cladding material is less than the index of refraction of the laser gain medium.
A laser system comprising:
- a laser waveguide comprising:
- an inner cladding layer surrounding a central axis, and surrounding a hollow central bore that extends between opposing first and second ends along a length of the waveguide;
- a glass core surrounding and located outside of the inner cladding layer, the glass core including a laser-active material;
- and
- an outer cladding layer surrounding and located outside of the glass core;
- a power source;
- input coupling optics coupling the power source to the laser waveguide;
- an optical feedback system coupled to the laser waveguide;
- and
- an output coupler coupled to the laser waveguide.
