Time instant reference for ultra wideband systems

A method comprising:

• prior to a ranging operation, receiving, via a transceiver, a time instant reference from an other electronic device, wherein the time instant reference is used in processing Ultra Wideband (UWB) communications between an electronic device and the other electronic device;
• during the ranging operation, receiving, via the transceiver, a ranging signal based at least in part on the time instant reference;
• and
• estimating a distance between the electronic device and the other electronic device based at least in part on the time instant reference and the ranging signal.

A non-transitory computer-readable medium having instructions stored therein, which when executed by one or more processors in an electronic device cause the one or more processors to perform operations for utilizing a pulse shaping interoperability protocol for Ultra Wideband (UWB) communications, the operations comprising:

• prior to a ranging operation, receiving, via a transceiver, a time instant reference from an other electronic device, wherein the time instant reference is used to process a ranging signal that is received from the other electronic device subsequent to the receipt of the time instant reference, wherein the time instant reference satisfies one or more regional aspects associated with a location of the electronic device;
• during the ranging operation, receiving, with the electronic device, the ranging signal based at least in part on the time instant reference;
• and
• computing a distance between the electronic device and the other electronic device based at least in part on the time instant reference and the ranging signal.
