The invention relates to bismuth perfluoroalkylphosphinates as Lewis acid catalysts, the compounds, and processes for the preparation thereof. ArxBi[OP(O)(Rf)2]3-x (Ia), Ar3Bi[OP(O)(Rf)2]2 (Ib).

- ArxBi[OP(O)(Rf)2]3-x (Ia),
- Ar3Bi[OP(O)(Rf)2]2 (Ib)
- where
- Ar in each case, independently of one another, denotes an aryl group having 6 to 12 C atoms, which is unsubstituted or optionally substituted;
- Rf in each case, independently of one another, denotes a straight-chain or branched perfluoroalkyl group having 1 to 8 C atoms and
- x denotes 0, 1 or 2.
