Abstract
Methods, systems, and apparatuses for anaerobic digestion of waste fibrous material and the recovery of nutrients are provided. Methods, systems, and apparatuses disclosed herein provide mechanisms to release dissolved gases from anaerobic digester effluent. Methods, systems and apparatuses disclosed herein can recover one or more nutrients from anaerobic digested effluent using a range of temperatures, aeration rates, aeration times, pH ranges, and settling times.
Claims17
A nutrient recovery system comprising:
- an anaerobic digester configured to digest waste material and produce digested biomass and effluent;
- an effluent pit configured to accept anaerobic digester effluent and having a heating apparatus for heating the anaerobic digester effluent;
- a vessel having a first chamber and a second chamber with a gas headspace above a liquid level and below the vessel ceiling to store gaseous ammonia, the first chamber configured to accept anaerobic digested effluent from the effluent pit, and having aerators for aerating the anaerobic digester effluent, wherein aerating the effluent converts soluble ammonium to gaseous ammonia;
- a separator configured to separate solids and liquids in the effluent received from the first chamber;
- the second chamber of the vessel configured to accept effluent from the separator,
- a vacuum pump configured to pump gaseous ammonia from the headspace of the vessel to a first stripping tower;
- the first stripping tower configured for mixing controlled amounts of acid with gaseous ammonia from the headspace of the vessel;
- and
- a second stripping tower configured for mixing controlled amounts of acid with unreacted gaseous ammonia from the first stripping tower.
A nutrient recovery system comprising:
- an anaerobic digester configured for digesting waste material and producing digested biomass and effluent;
- an effluent pit configured to accept effluent from the anaerobic digester and having a heating apparatus for heating the effluent;
- a vessel configured to accept anaerobic digested effluent from the effluent pit and having a gas headspace above a liquid level and below the vessel ceiling to store gaseous ammona, the vessel having aerators for aerating the anaerobic digester effluent, wherein aerating the effluent converts soluble ammonium to gaseous ammonia;
- a stripping tower for mixing controlled amounts of acid with gaseous ammonia from the headspace of the vessel;
- and
- a reaction vessel for mixing biogas from the anaerobic digester and the effluent from the vessel.
A nutrient recovery system comprising:
- a vessel configured to accept anaerobic digested effluent and having a gas headspace above a liquid level and below the vessel ceiling to store gaseous ammonia, the vessel having aerators for aerating the anaerobic digester effluent, wherein aerating the effluent converts soluble ammonium to gaseous ammonia;
- a vacuum pump configured to pump gaseous ammonia from the headspace of the vessel to a first stripping tower;
- the first stripping tower configured for mixing controlled amounts of acid with gaseous ammonia from the headspace of the vessel;
- and
- a second stripping tower configured for mixing controlled amounts of acid with unreacted gaseous ammonia from the first stripping tower.
