Abstract
A pulp fiber with an enhanced carboxyl content resulting in improved antimicrobial, anti-yellowing and absorptive properties is described. Methods for making the kraft pulp fiber and products made from it are also described.

A chemically modified kraft fiber comprising cellulose having a carboxyl content greater than about 6 meq/100 g, an aldehyde content of less than 1 meq/100 g, a copper number of less than about 1.6, and a viscosity less than 5.5 mPa·s.
