Abstract
A perspective-based search system and method is disclosed. The perspective based system allows users to select specific perspectives on a search topic and view the results from those perspectives. In addition, perspective-based searching allows users to more easily infer their own search intents with greater clarity, and without complex or multiple queries.
Claims20
A system comprising:
- one or more computers;
- and
- one or more storage devices, the one or more storage devices storing instructions that, when executed by the one or more computers, cause the one or more computers to perform operations including:
- receiving a first search query from a first client device;
- receiving, in response to the first search query, search result data identifying a plurality of resources and respective perspective data for each of the plurality of resources;
- selecting and ranking, based on the received perspective data, a plurality of perspectives for the first search query, the plurality of perspectives comprising:
- a different beliefs perspective comprising a range of positions associated with a belief framework of an individual;
- a social network members perspective comprising a viewpoint of a member of a social network;
- a facet perspective comprising a facet of the first search query;
- a data source perspective comprising a viewpoint of a resource of the plurality of resources;
- a named entity perspective comprising a name of an entity associated with the first search query;
- a demographic factors perspective comprising a demographic factor of at least one person of a population, the demographic factor comprising at least one of a personality, an expertise, an age, a language proficiency, a profession, an income level, a socioeconomic status, an ethnicity, an education, a gender, a marital status, or combinations thereof;
- and
- a sentiment perspective comprising one of a negative sentiment and a positive sentiment;
- receiving, from the first client device, a selection of a first perspective included in the first plurality of perspectives;
- selecting first search results in response to the first search query and ranked based at least in part on a calculated relevance for each of the first search results to the selected first perspective;
- and
- providing the first search results to the first client device.

A method comprising:
- receiving a first search query from a first client device;
- receiving, in response to the first search query, search result data identifying a plurality of resources and respective perspective data for each of the plurality of resources;
- selecting and ranking, based on the received perspective data, a plurality of perspectives for the first search query, the plurality of perspectives comprising:
- a different beliefs perspective comprising a range of positions associated with a belief framework of an individual;
- a social network members perspective comprising a viewpoint of a member of a social network;
- a facet perspective comprising a facet of the first search query;
- a data source perspective comprising a viewpoint of a resource of the plurality of resources;
- a named entity perspective comprising a name of an entity associated with the first search query;

- receiving, from the first client device, a selection of a first perspective included in the first plurality of perspectives;
- selecting first search results in response to the first search query and ranked based at least in part on a calculated relevance for each of the first search results to the selected first perspective;
- and
- providing the first search results to the first client device.
