A method of operating an electronic device is provided. The method includes selecting at least one particular location in content displayed on a display, identifying text included in the at least one particular location, and executing at least one program based on the text.

A method of operating an electronic device, the method comprising:
- displaying multimedia content;
- detecting an input on a visual object, which is a non-executable object, included in the multimedia content being displayed;
- obtaining, by recognizing the visual object from the multimedia content, information of the visual object;
- identifying an application among a plurality of applications that are stored in the electronic device by comparing the information of the visual object with representative information of each of the plurality of applications;
- and
- executing the identified application,
- wherein the representative information of the application includes at least one of:
- an image resource of the application including at least one of an icon, a layout, a color, a mascot or a button shape, or
- a keyword indicating a function of the application.

- a display;
- and
- at least one processor configured to:
- display multimedia content,
- detect an input on a visual object, which is a non-executable object, included in the multimedia content being displayed,
- obtain, by recognizing the visual object from the multimedia content, information of the visual object,
- identify among an application a plurality of applications that are stored in the electronic device by comparing the information of the visual object with representative information of each of the plurality of applications, and
- execute the identified application,
- wherein the representative information of the application includes at least one of:
- an image resource of the application including at least one of an icon, a layout, a color, a mascot or a button shape, or
- a keyword indicating a function of the application.
