Abstract
The present disclosure is directed to a system and method for obtaining a desirable shielding gas flow in a welding device. The system includes a user interface configured for a user to input the size of the nozzle, a processor that is configured to calculate a desirable flow rate of shielding gas based at least in part on the input nozzle size, and a flow regulator that is configured to control the flow of the shielding gas in order to obtain the desirable flow rate.
Claims19
A system for obtaining a desirable shielding gas flow in a welding device, the system comprising:
- a user interface configured for a user to input the size of a nozzle;
- a processor configured to calculate a desirable flow rate of the shielding gas using the following algorithm:
- Q
- =
- π
-
-
- Re
-
-
- μ
-
-
- D
- H
- 4
-
-
- ρ
- wherein
- Q is the calculated flow rate of the shielding gas;
- Re is a Reynolds number that provides for a desirable shielding gas flow profile, which is either preset or determined by the processor in response to user input;
- μ is the dynamic viscosity of the shielding gas and ρ is the density of the shielding gas, which are either preset or determined by the processor in response to user input identifying the shielding gas;
- and
- DH is the hydraulic diameter of the nozzle, which is determined by the processor in response to the user input nozzle size;
- and
- a flow regulator configured to control the flow of the shielding gas in order to obtain the desirable flow rate.
A method for obtaining a desirable shielding gas column in a welding device, the method comprising:
- a. prompting a user to input a size of a nozzle;
- b. determining a desirable flow rate for the shielding gas using the following algorithm:
- Q
- =
- π
-
-
- R
-
-
- e
-
-
- μ
-
-
- D
- H
- 4
-
-
- ρ
- wherein
- Q is the calculated flow rate of the shielding gas;
- Re is a Reynolds number that provides for a desirable shielding gas flow profile, which is either preset or determined by the processor in response to user input;
- μ is the dynamic viscosity of the shielding gas and ρ is the density of the shielding gas, which are either preset or determined by the processor in response to user input identifying the shielding gas;
- and
- DH is the hydraulic diameter of the nozzle, which is determined by the processor in response to the input nozzle size;
- and
- c. controlling the flow of the shielding gas to obtain the desirable shielding gas flow rate.
