Abstract
A rotatable operating head for removal of obstructive material from a target site in a body lumen or cavity is operably connected to a rotatable, translatable drive shaft that is driven by a drive motor and received through an elongated catheter. The operating head includes a plurality of differential cutting blades, with at least one of the cutting blades being a stepped blade, the stepped blade comprising a raised cutting surface positioned adjacent, or in proximity to, a shoulder region.
Claims20
A method for removal of obstructive material from a target site in a body lumen, comprising:
- rotating an operating head connected to a distal end of a rotatable drive shaft in a first rotational direction such that a plurality of first leading edge cutting surfaces ablate obstructive material at the target site;
- and
- rotating the operating head in a second rotational direction opposite the first rotational direction such that a plurality of second leading edge cutting surfaces ablate obstructive material at the target site;
- wherein the plurality of second leading edge cutting surfaces ablate the obstructive material at a greater rate than the plurality of first leading edge cutting surfaces;
- wherein the operating head includes a plurality of cutting blades, wherein the plurality of second leading edge cutting surfaces are located on the plurality of cutting blades,
- wherein each of the plurality of cutting blades includes a shoulder region atraumatic to tissue,
- wherein the shoulder region restricts how far the plurality of second leading edge cutting surfaces cut into the obstructive material.
A method for removal of obstructive material from a target site in a body lumen, comprising:
- rotating an operating head connected to a distal end of a rotatable drive shaft in a first rotational direction such that a plurality of first leading edge cutting surfaces ablate obstructive material at the target site, the plurality of first leading edge cutting surfaces being coated with an abrasive material for initially contacting the obstructive material when the operating head is rotated in the first rotational direction;
- and
- rotating the operating head in a second rotational direction opposite the first rotational direction such that a plurality of second leading edge cutting surfaces ablate obstructive material at the target site;
- wherein the abrasive material is on trailing surfaces of the operating head when the operating head is rotated in the second rotational direction;
- wherein the obstructive material is ablated at a greater rate in the second rotational direction than in the first rotational direction,
- wherein the operating head includes a plurality of shoulder regions restricting how far the plurality of second leading edge cutting surfaces cut into the obstructive material in the second rotational direction.
A method for removal of obstructive material from a target site in a body lumen, comprising:
- rotating an operating head connected to a distal end of a rotatable drive shaft in a first rotational direction such that a plurality of first leading edge cutting surfaces ablate obstructive material at the target site;
- and
- rotating the operating head in a second rotational direction opposite the first rotational direction such that a plurality of second leading edge cutting surfaces ablate obstructive material at the target site;
- wherein the plurality of second leading edge cutting surfaces ablate the obstructive material at a greater rate than the plurality of first leading edge cutting surfaces,
- wherein the operating head includes a plurality of cutting blades,
- wherein the plurality of second leading edge cutting surfaces are located on the plurality of cutting blades,
- wherein each of the plurality of cutting blades includes a shoulder region atraumatic to tissue,
- wherein obstructive material is contacted first by the shoulder region prior to contacting the plurality of second leading edge cutting surfaces while rotating the operating head in the second rotational direction.
