Abstract
Biomass (e.g., plant biomass, animal biomass, and municipal waste biomass) is processed to produce useful products, such as fuels. For example, systems can use feedstock materials, such as cellulosic and/or lignocellulosic materials and/or starchy or sugary materials, to produce ethanol and/or butanol, e.g., by fermentation.
Claims11
A method of converting an intermediate to a product, the method comprising:
- treating an irradiated intermediate product with a microorganism, the intermediate having been prepared by irradiating a starchy material and treating the starchy material with an enzyme;
- wherein irradiating comprises exposing the starchy material to electron beam radiation at a dose rate of greater than 1 Mrad/sec at a power of 5 kW or more.
