Battery pack management

A method, comprising:

• determining, in real time, whether a battery is being charged or discharged;
• in response to determining the battery is being discharged, performing steps of:
• measuring current from the battery since a preceding calculation of remaining capacity of the battery,
• calculating from the measured current from the battery a first value representing an uncorrected amount by which the battery has discharged since the preceding calculation of remaining capacity of the battery,
• adjusting the first value as a function of a condition of the battery to produce a corrected amount by which the battery has discharged since the preceding calculation of remaining capacity of the battery, the condition of the battery being at least one of battery age and self-discharge of the battery, wherein the self-discharge of the battery is discharge of the battery that occurs when the battery is not providing the output current to the load, and
• recalculating the remaining capacity of the battery as a function of the preceding calculation of remaining capacity of the battery and the corrected amount by which the battery has discharged since the preceding calculation of remaining capacity of the battery.

A method, comprising:

• determining, in real time, whether a battery is being charged or discharged;
• in response to determining the battery is being charged, performing steps of:
• measuring current to the battery since a preceding calculation of remaining capacity of the battery,
• calculating from the measured current to the battery a value representing an uncorrected amount by which the battery has charged since the preceding calculation of remaining capacity of the battery,
• adjusting the value as a function of a condition of the battery to produce a corrected amount by which the battery has charged since the preceding calculation of remaining capacity of the battery, the condition of the battery being at least one of battery age and self-discharge of the battery, wherein the self-discharge of the battery is discharge of the battery that occurs when the battery is not providing an output current to a load, and
• recalculating the remaining capacity of the battery as a function of the preceding calculation of remaining capacity of the battery and the corrected amount by which the battery has charged since the preceding calculation of remaining capacity of the battery.
