Abstract
One embodiment provides an apparatus. The apparatus includes a sensor module. The sensor module includes a sensor; and a sensor controller. The sensor controller is to enumerate the sensor to a sensor processing unit in response to being powered on. The enumerating includes communicating enumeration data to the sensor processing unit. The enumeration data includes one or more of a sensor name, a sensor manufacturer name, a sensor serial number, a hardware version, a firmware version, and/or one or more sensor characteristics. The sensor controller is further to monitor operation of the sensor and to provide sensor lifecycle information to the sensor processing unit over the lifecycle of the sensor.

A sensor lifecycle management apparatus comprising:
- a sensor processing unit;
- and
- a sensor module comprising:
- a sensor;
- and
- a sensor controller to communicate, to the sensor processing unit, enumeration data using an enumeration descriptor, lifecycle data using a lifecycle report descriptor, and sensor data using a sensor data report;
- wherein, the enumeration descriptor comprises:
- an 8-byte sensor name field used by the sensor processing unit to identify the sensor based on a sensor type;
- a 6-byte serial number field used by the sensor processing unit to identify the sensor based on a sensor serial number;
- and
- a 2-byte authentication key field used by the sensor processing unit to authenticate the specific sensor module that is reporting the enumeration descriptor and permit that sensor module to commence normal operation;
- wherein, the sensor module generates a unique 2-byte authentication key field by performing an exclusive-OR operation using a lower two bytes of the sensor serial number associated with that sensor module and a random seed provided by the sensor processing unit;
- and
- wherein, the lifecycle report descriptor comprises:
- a 1-byte sensor-specific report ID field used by the sensor processing unit to identify which sensor is reporting data;
- a 2-byte sensor state usage ID field used by the sensor processing unit to identify that the type of data being reported is the lifecycle data;
- and
- a 2-byte actual sensor state field used by the sensor processing unit to determine whether the sensor currently reporting lifecycle data is ready to present sensor data.
A computer readable storage device having stored thereon instructions that when executed by one or more processors result in the following operations comprising:
- communicate, to a sensor processing unit, by a sensor module comprising a sensor and a sensor controller, enumeration data using an enumeration descriptor;
- wherein, enumeration descriptor comprises:
- an 8-byte sensor name field used by the sensor processing unit to identify the sensor based on a sensor type;
- a 6-byte serial number field used by the sensor processing unit to identify the sensor based on a sensor serial number;
- and
- a 2-byte authentication key field used by the sensor processing unit to authenticate the specific sensor module that is reporting the enumeration descriptor and permit that sensor module to commence normal operation;
- wherein, the sensor module generates a unique 2-byte authentication key field by performing an exclusive-OR operation using a lower two bytes of the sensor serial number associated with that sensor module and a random seed provided by the sensor processing unit;
- and
- communicate, to the sensor processing unit, by the sensor module, lifecycle data using a lifecycle report descriptor;
- wherein, the lifecycle report descriptor comprises:
- a 1-byte sensor-specific report ID field used by the sensor processing unit to identify which sensor is reporting data;
- a 2-byte sensor state usage ID field used by the sensor processing unit to identify that the type of data being reported is the lifecycle data;
- and
- a 2-byte actual sensor state field used by the sensor processing unit to determine whether the sensor currently reporting lifecycle data is ready to present sensor data;
- communicate, to the sensor processing unit, by the sensor module, sensor data using a sensor data report.
A sensor lifecycle management system comprising:
- a sensor processing unit;
- and
- a sensor module comprising:
- a sensor;
- and
- a sensor controller to communicate, to the sensor processing unit, enumeration data using an enumeration descriptor, lifecycle data using a lifecycle report descriptor, and sensor data using a sensor data report;
- wherein, the enumeration descriptor comprises:
- an 8-byte sensor name field used by the sensor processing unit to identify the sensor based on a sensor type;
- a 6-byte serial number field used by the sensor processing unit to identify the sensor based on a sensor serial number;
- and
- a 2-byte authentication key field used by the sensor processing unit to authenticate the specific sensor module that is reporting the enumeration descriptor and permit that sensor module to commence normal operation;
- wherein, the sensor module generates a unique 2-byte authentication key field by performing an exclusive-OR operation using a lower two bytes of the sensor serial number associated with that sensor module and a random seed provided by the sensor processing unit;
- and
- wherein, the lifecycle report descriptor comprises:
- a 1-byte sensor-specific report ID field used by the sensor processing unit to identify which sensor is reporting data;
- a 2-byte sensor state usage ID field used by the sensor processing unit to identify that the type of data being reported is the lifecycle data;
- and
- a 2-byte actual sensor state field used by the sensor processing unit to determine whether the sensor currently reporting lifecycle data is ready to present sensor data.
