## Abstract

A battery monitoring system includes a plurality of battery cells connected in series; a cell voltage measurement circuit for measuring a voltage of the battery cells; a first terminal connected to the cell voltage measurement circuit; a second terminal having a potential higher than that of the first terminal; and a protection circuit connected to the second terminal for discharging an electric current to the second terminal so that the cell voltage measurement circuit is protected.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A battery monitoring system comprising:
a plurality of battery cells connected in series;
a cell voltage measurement circuit for measuring a voltage of the battery cells;
a first terminal connected directly to the cell voltage measurement circuit with no circuitry element in between;
a second terminal isolated from the cell voltage measurement circuit, said second terminal having a potential higher than that of the first terminal; and
a protection circuit connected to the second terminal for discharging an electric current from a protection element to the second terminal so that the cell voltage measurement circuit is protected.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The battery monitoring system according to claim 1, further comprising a first filter connected to the first terminal.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The battery monitoring system according to claim 2, wherein said first filter is a low pass filter formed of a resistor and a capacitor.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The battery monitoring system according to claim 1, further comprising a second filter connected to the second terminal.

### Claim 5 (depends on 4)

The battery monitoring system according to claim 4, wherein said second filter is a low pass filter formed of a resistor and a capacitor.

### Claim 6

A semiconductor device capable of measuring a voltage of a plurality of battery cells connected in series, comprising:
a cell voltage measurement circuit for measuring the voltage of the battery cells;
a first terminal connected directly to the cell voltage measurement circuit with no circuitry element in between;
a second terminal isolated from the cell voltage measurement circuit, said second terminal having a potential higher than that of the first terminal; and
a protection circuit connected to the second terminal for discharging an electric current from a protection element to the second terminal so that the cell voltage measurement circuit is protected.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The battery monitoring system according to claim 1, further comprising a third terminal connected to the battery cells, said third terminal being connected to the cell voltage measurement circuit through the protection element.
