## Abstract

A multiple suction cup apparatus for lifting an object includes the capability of exchanging a large and small suction cup. At least one interlock enables the large or small suction cup to be deployed. The interlocks include passive interlocks, such as ball detents and conventional magnets, and active interlocks, such as a twist lock and electronic actuated magnets.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A concentric, multiple suction cup assembly for deploying and exchanging the suction cups, the assembly comprising:
an outer suction cup for lifting relatively large objects;
an inner suction cup, nestable within the outer suction cup, for lifting relatively small objects;
a tubular housing for mounting to an end effector;
an inner tube being concentric with the housing, and being extendible and retractable relative to the housing,
the inner suction cup being permanently affixed to a distal end of the inner tube;
the outer suction cup being selectively engageable with the distal end of the inner tube or the housing;
wherein when the outer suction cup is engaged with the inner tube: (i) the inner suction cup is recessed within the outer suction cup and (ii) the outer suction cup is extendible from the housing with the inner tube, thereby enabling the outer suction cup to engage the object; and
wherein when the outer suction cup is engaged with the housing, the inner suction cup is extendible from the housing and from the outer suction cup, thereby enabling the inner suction cup to engage the object.

### Claim 2

A multiple suction cup assembly configured for mounting to an end effector, the assembly comprising:
a housing defining a longitudinal axis, the housing being adapted for operatively mounting to an end effector;
an inner tube within the housing;
an outer suction cup releasably engaged with the housing and releasably engaged with the inner tube;
an inner suction cup mounted to a distal end of the inner tube and concentric with the outer suction cup, having a diameter that is less than a diameter of the outer cup;
a linear actuator adapted for extending and retracting the inner tube relative to the housing;
a vacuum source in communication with each one of the first suction cup and the second suction cup;
whereby the outer suction cup is adapted for engaging and lifting relatively large items in a large-item operating mode in which the inner suction cup is retracted relative to the outer suction cup and the outer suction cup is engaged with the inner, and
whereby the inner suction cup is adapted for engaging and lifting relatively small items in a small-item operating mode in which the inner tube is extended relative to the outer suction cup and the outer suction cup is engaged with the housing.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The multiple suction cup assembly of claim 1 wherein the assembly includes a housing interlock releasably engaging the outer suction cup to the housing and an inner tube interlock releasably engaging the outer suction cup to the inner tube.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The multiple suction cup assembly of claim 1 wherein one of the housing interlock and the inner tube interlock is a passive interlock and the other one of the housing interlock and the inner tube interlock is an active interlock.

### Claim 5 (depends on 3)

The multiple suction cup assembly of claim 3 wherein the housing interlock includes an electromagnet and the inner tube interlock includes a detent; and wherein a housing interlock force required to overcome the electromagnets is greater than an inner tube interlock force required to overcome the passive detents.

### Claim 6 (depends on 5)

The multiple suction cup assembly of claim 5 wherein the passive detent is plural, spring-loaded ball detents.

### Claim 7 (depends on 5)

The multiple suction cup assembly of claim 5 wherein the electromagnets when energized create the housing interlock force, and the electromagnets when de-energized enable outer suction cup to release from the housing.

### Claim 8 (depends on 3)

The multiple suction cup assembly of claim 3 wherein the housing interlock includes a detent and the inner tube interlock includes a rotational interlock adapted for releasably engaging the outer suction cup to the inner tube when the outer suction cup is in a fully interlocked position; and wherein a force required to overcome the rotational interlock is greater than a force required to overcome the detent.

### Claim 9 (depends on 8)

The multiple suction cup assembly of claim 8 wherein the detent includes plural, spring-loaded ball detents.

### Claim 10 (depends on 8)

The multiple suction cup assembly of claim 8 wherein the rotational interlock includes tabs engaged in corresponding grooves.

### Claim 11 (depends on 10)

The multiple suction cup assembly of claim 10 wherein the tabs are on the inner tube and the grooves are located on the outer suction cup.

### Claim 12 (depends on 8)

The multiple suction cup assembly of claim 8 further comprising a suction cup actuator to rotate the suction cup to selectively engage or disengage the tabs in the grooves.

### Claim 13 (depends on 8)

The multiple suction cup assembly of claim 8 wherein the detent is magnets that engage when the outer suction cup in a fully interlocked position.

### Claim 14 (depends on 13)

The multiple suction cup assembly of claim 13 wherein the detent includes first magnets located on the outer suction cup and second magnets located on the inner tube, the first magnets and second magnets being aligned when the suction cup is in the fully interlocked position.

### Claim 15 (depends on 3)
