## Abstract

Embodiments disclosed herein are directed to devices, methods, and systems for the treatment of tissue using energy delivery. Specifically, certain embodiments may be used for the treatment of lung tissue, such as lung nodules, using RF ablation, via a catheter provided with a first electrode attached to a distal end of the catheter, wherein the first electrode is hollow, wherein the first electrode comprises a piercing tip configured to pierce through an airway all and a second electrode received in a movable manner within the first electrode, wherein the second electrode is extendable from the first electrode to form a first extended configuration.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A device for the delivery of energy to a region of lung tissue, the device comprising:
a guide sheath;
a catheter configured to be inserted into the guide sheath;
a first electrode attached to the distal end of the catheter, wherein the first electrode and the catheter are hollow, thereby forming a channel enclosed by the first electrode and the catheter, wherein the first electrode comprises a piercing tip configured to pierce through an airway wall;
a second electrode received in a movable manner within the channel of the first electrode, wherein the second electrode is in a first configuration when within the first electrode, wherein when a distal end of the second electrode extends distally from the first electrode, a portion of the second electrode that is extended from the first electrode changes from the first configuration to a second configuration;
a first electrical lead in electric communication with the first electrode; and
a second electrical lead in electric communication with the second electrode, wherein the first and second electrical leads are connectable to a source of electric power,
wherein the second configuration comprises a helical configuration,
wherein in the first configuration the second electrode conforms to the channel of the first electrode,
wherein the first configuration is not a helical configuration.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The device of claim 1, further comprising a handle attached at a proximal end of the catheter, wherein the handle comprises an activation toggle configured to extend the second electrode from the first electrode.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The device of claim 1, wherein the second electrode extends from within the first electrode through an aperture in the first electrode.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The device of claim 1, wherein the catheter is dimensioned to be insertable into a bronchoscope comprising a side-facing ultrasound probe.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The device of claim 1, wherein the second electrode is constructed at least in part from a shape-memory material having a martensite configuration at a first lower temperature, and an austenite configuration at a second temperature above body temperature, and wherein the second electrode is configured to adopt a first straight configuration while in the martensite configuration, and a bend or coil while in the austenite configuration.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The device of claim 1, wherein the first and second electrodes comprise a bipolar radiofrequency ablation electrode.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The device of claim 1, further comprising a fluid source connected to the catheter and in fluid communication with at least one of the first or second electrodes.

### Claim 8

A system for the delivery of energy to a region of lung tissue, the system comprising:
an energy delivery device comprising:
a catheter configured to be inserted into an airway, the catheter comprising a first electrode and a second electrode;
a handle attached at a proximal end of the catheter, the handle comprising a first activation toggle configured to extend the second electrode from a channel enclosed by the first electrode and the catheter,
wherein the second electrode is received in a movable manner within the channel of the first electrode,
wherein the second electrode is extendable from a distal end of the first electrode to form a first extended configuration,
wherein the second electrode is in a first configuration when within the first electrode,
wherein when a distal end of the second electrode extends distally from the first electrode, a portion of the second electrode that is extended from the first electrode transitions to a second configuration; and
a power source connected to the first electrode and the second electrode via first and second electrical leads, the power source configured to deliver RF energy; and
a conduit insertable into an airway and selected from the group consisting of a bronchoscope and a guide sheath, the catheter being insertable and movable therein,
wherein when in the first configuration the second electrode conforms to the first electrode,
wherein the second configuration is at least one of a helical or a coiled configuration,
wherein the first configuration is not one of a helical or a coiled configuration.

### Claim 9 (depends on 8)

The system of claim 8, further comprising a fluid source connected to the device and configured to deliver fluid out of a distal end of the catheter.

### Claim 10

A device for the delivery of energy to a region of lung tissue, the device comprising:
a guide sheath;
a catheter configured to be inserted into the guide sheath, the catheter comprises a distal section, the distal section comprises a first electrode, wherein the first electrode and the catheter are hollow having a channel enclosed by the first electrode and the catheter, wherein a distal end of the distal section comprises a piercing tip configured to pierce through an airway wall; and
a second electrode received in a movable manner within the channel of the first electrode, wherein the second electrode is extendable independent from the first electrode,
wherein the second electrode extends proximally from the piercing tip to form a coil,
wherein the device comprises:
a pre-tissue piercing configuration, wherein the second electrode is positioned within the channel of the first electrode and the first electrode is positioned within the guide sheath, wherein a configuration of the second electrode conforms to the catheter;
a tissue piercing configuration, wherein the second electrode is positioned within the first electrode and the first electrode is extended beyond a distal end of the guide sheath; and
an energy delivery configuration, wherein the first electrode is extended beyond the distal end of the guide sheath and the second electrode is extended beyond the piercing tip,
wherein a portion of the second electrode that is extended from the piercing tip changes from the configuration of the catheter to a second configuration, wherein the second configuration comprises a helical configuration,
wherein the catheter is not in a helical configuration when in the pre-tissue piercing configuration and in the tissue piercing configuration.
