## Abstract

Systems and methods for percutaneously installing a vertebral stabilization system. A first anchor is positionable within a body of a patient through a first percutaneous opening and a second anchor is positionable within a body of a patient through a second percutaneous opening. A stabilization member is positionable within the body of a patient through the first percutaneous opening to engage and connect the first and second anchors.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A system for inserting a vertebral stabilization member percutaneously, comprising:
a bone anchor;
a sleeve attached to the bone anchor;
a rod member extending from a proximal end to a distal end along a rod axis, wherein the rod member has a pair of indentations coaxially aligned on a pivot axis that extends generally perpendicular to the rod axis and the rod member is pivotable about the pivot axis; and
an insertion device releasably coupled to the rod member and configured to insert the rod member into position adjacent the bone anchor, wherein the insertion device extends from a proximal end to a distal end along a longitudinal axis, the insertion device comprising a first member and a second member, wherein the first member is linearly translatable with respect to the second member along the longitudinal axis, wherein the rod member is engaged to the first member at a first axial location along the rod member and rotatably engaged to the second member at a second axial location along the rod member that is axially offset from the first axial location such that, when the first member is translated with respect to the second member along the longitudinal axis the rod member rotates about the second member.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The system of claim 1, wherein the rod member is actuatable by the insertion device from a first orientation substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis to a second orientation substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The system of claim 1, wherein the rod member has a curvilinear shape.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The system of claim 1, wherein the rod member has a generally tapered or conical shaped nose at the distal end.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The system of claim 1, wherein the insertion device is rotatably linked to the rod member about the indentations.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The system of claim 1, wherein indentations are semi-circular.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The system of claim 1, wherein indentations are rectangular.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The system of claim 1, wherein indentations are triangular.

### Claim 9 (depends on 1)

The system of claim 1, wherein the indentations comprise semispherical concave shapes that cooperatively engage semispherical protrusions of the first member of the insertion device.

### Claim 10 (depends on 1)

The system of claim 1, wherein the first member comprises forked arm portions that may be resiliently expanded to allow the protrusions to snap into the indentations.

### Claim 11 (depends on 1)

The system of claim 1, wherein the insertion device is operable to place the rod member through a small opening in the skin of a patient in a first orientation.

### Claim 12

A system for inserting a vertebral stabilization member percutaneously, comprising:
a bone anchor;
a sleeve attached to the bone anchor;
a rod member extending from a proximal end to a distal end along a rod axis, wherein the rod member has a pair of indentations coaxially aligned on a pivot axis that extends generally perpendicular to the rod axis and the rod member is pivotable about the pivot axis; and
an insertion device releasably coupled to the rod member and configured to insert the rod member into position adjacent the bone anchor, wherein the insertion device extends from a proximal end to a distal end along a longitudinal axis, wherein the insertion device is rotatably linked to the rod member about the indentations, and the rod member is actuatable by the insertion device from a first orientation substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis to a second orientation substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis,
wherein the insertion device comprises a first member and a second member, wherein the first member is linearly translatable with respect to the second member along the longitudinal axis, wherein the rod member is engaged to the first member at a first axial location along the rod member and rotatably engaged to the second member at a second axial location along the rod member that is axially offset from the first axial location such that, when the first member is translated with respect to the second member along the longitudinal axis the rod member rotates about the second member.

### Claim 13 (depends on 12)

### Claim 14 (depends on 12)

The system of claim 12, wherein the indentations comprise semispherical concave shapes that cooperatively engage semispherical protrusions of the first member of the insertion device.

### Claim 15 (depends on 12)

The system of claim 12, wherein the rod member has a curvilinear shape.

### Claim 16 (depends on 12)

The system of claim 12, wherein the rod member has a generally tapered or conical shaped nose at the distal end.
