## Abstract

A surface cleaning apparatus having a suction hose and a hose storage chamber. The suction hose is adjustable between an extended configuration and a retracted configuration and the suction hose is biased to the extended configuration by a biasing member.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A surface cleaning apparatus comprising:
(a) a fluid flow path extending from a dirty fluid inlet to a clean air outlet of the surface cleaning apparatus and including a suction hose, an air treatment member and a suction motor; and,
(b) a hose storage chamber,
wherein the suction hose has an expandable sidewall that is adjustable between an extended configuration and a retracted configuration,
wherein, in the retracted configuration, a length of the suction hose is shorter than when the suction hose is in the extended configuration,
wherein, when the suction hose is in the hose storage chamber, the suction hose is in the retracted configuration,
wherein the suction hose comprises a bias that biases the hose to the extended configuration,
wherein the storage chamber comprises a securement member comprising an engagement end and the securement member is pivotally mounted whereby the securement member pivots between an engaged position in which the engagement end engages the expandable sidewall of the suction hose whereby outward axial movement of the hose is inhibited and a disengaged position whereby outward axial movement of the hose is enabled,
wherein the engagement end is engageable with the expandable sidewall of the suction hose at a plurality of locations along a length of the suction hose, and
wherein inward motion of the suction hose causes the engagement end to move away from the engaged position whereby inward movement of the suction hose into the hose storage chamber is enabled, and outward motion of the suction hose causes the engagement end to move towards the engaged position.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 1, wherein the suction hose is contracted upon entry to the storage chamber.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 1, wherein, when the securement member disengages from the suction hose, withdrawal of the suction hose from the storage chamber is enabled and the suction hose expands upon exiting the storage chamber.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 1, wherein the suction hose expands upon exiting the storage chamber solely due to a force applied by the bias.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 1, wherein the securement member is biased to the engaged position.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 1, wherein the securement member has a first engagement end which is engageable with the expandable sidewall of the suction hose at a plurality of locations along a length of the suction hose and an inner end that is moveably mounted, the securement member is moveable between the engaged position in which the engagement end engages the expandable sidewall of the suction hose and the disengaged position in which the engagement end is disengaged from the expendable sidewall of the suction hose.

### Claim 7

A surface cleaning apparatus comprising:
(a) a fluid flow path extending from a dirty fluid inlet to a clean air outlet of the surface cleaning apparatus and including a suction hose, an air treatment member and a suction motor; and,
(b) a hose storage chamber,
wherein the suction hose has an expandable sidewall that is adjustable between an extended configuration and a retracted configuration,
wherein, in the retracted configuration, a length of the suction hose is shorter than when the suction hose is in the extended configuration,
wherein, when the suction hose is in the hose storage chamber, the suction hose is in the retracted configuration,
wherein the suction hose comprises a bias that biases the hose to the extended configuration,
wherein the storage chamber comprises a securement member that is moveable between an engaged position in which the securement member engages the expandable sidewall of the suction hose whereby outward axial movement of the hose is inhibited and a disengaged position whereby outward axial movement of the hose is enabled,
wherein the securement member is engageable with the expandable sidewall of the suction hose at a plurality of locations along a length of the suction hose, and
wherein the securement member comprises a one-way latch which engages the expandable sidewall of the suction hose.

### Claim 8 (depends on 7)

The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 7, wherein the securement member is engageable with a portion of the flexible sidewall of an extended portion of the suction hose.

### Claim 9 (depends on 7)

The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 7, wherein the storage chamber comprises et least one guide member operable to guide the suction hose as the suction hose moves between the extended configuration and the retracted configuration.

### Claim 10 (depends on 7)

The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 7, wherein the at least one guide member comprises a pair of opposed guide members provided on opposed sides of the suction hose.

### Claim 11 (depends on 7)

The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 7, further comprising a drive member drivingly connected to the at least one guide member.

### Claim 12 (depends on 7)

The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 7, wherein the bias is provided in the sidewall of the suction hose.
