A water cooling and heating system for swimming pools and hot tubs, the system heating and/or cooling a flow of water drawn from a body of water and then returning the heated and/or cooled flow of water back to the body of water;
- the system comprising an inlet conduit in fluid communication with an associated body of water to be heated or cooled, the inlet conduit directing a flow a water from the associated body of water toward a diverter wherein the diverter splits the flow of water into at least a fence flow of water and a bypass flow of water, the fence flow of water being in fluid communication with at least one horizontally extending fence rail having a horizontal heating and cooling portion extending from an inlet end to a distal end horizontally spaced from the inlet end, the horizontal heating and cooling portion having an outer conduit and an inner conduit, the inner conduit being substantially within the outer conduit between the inlet end and the distal end forming an outer water flow and an inner water flow, the inner water flow being within the inner conduit and the outer water flow being between the inner and outer conduits, the inner water flow and the outer water flow moving horizontally and parallel to one another within the horizontal heating and cooling portion, the horizontal heating and cooling portion having a water inlet and a water outlet both at least near the inlet end and horizontally spaced from the distal end, the water inlet being in fluid communication with one of the inner water flow and the outer water flow, the water outlet being in fluid communication with the other of the inner water flow and the outer water flow, the outer conduit extending between an inlet outer conduit end and a distal outer conduit end and the inner conduit extending between an inlet inner conduit end and a distal inner conduit end, the outer conduit having a closed outer conduit end forming the distal outer conduit end, the inner conduit having at least one inner conduit opening at least near the distal end and the closed outer conduit end of the outer conduit thereby forming a transfer zone between the inner and outer water flows wherein the inner and outer water flows are in fluid communication with each other at the distal end by way of the transfer zone such that the fence flow of water enters the horizontal heating and cooling portion via the water inlet and the fence flow of water forming one of the inner and outer water flows and being urged toward the distal end in a first flow direction until the fence flow of water enters the transfer zone and is then directed into the other of the inner and outer water flows wherein the fence flow of water is urged back toward the inlet end in a second flow direction that is opposite of and parallel to the first flow direction and the fence flow of water exiting the horizontal heating and cooling portion via the water outlet and the fence flow of water being directed back toward the associated body of water, the outer conduit of the horizontal heating and cooling portion having an exterior conduit surface that is exposed to solar energy from the sun whereby a portion of the solar energy absorbed by the outer conduit is transferred to and heats the outer water flow within the outer conduit and the outer water flow in the outer conduit heating the inner water flow of water in the inner conduit, the system further including at least one control valve to selectively control the flow of the fence and bypass flows of water wherein the bypass flow of water bypasses the at least one horizontally extending fence rail and the horizontal heating and cooling portion and is directed back toward the associated body of water.
