Overmolded inserts and methods for forming the same

A method for forming an overmolded insert, the method comprising:

• disposing a tapered insert and a compression element formed of a metal or metal alloy inside a mold,
• wherein the tapered insert comprises a taper increasing in width in the direction of a distal end of the tapered insert, and
• wherein the compression element is disposed adjacent the distal end of the tapered insert in the mold;
• filling the mold with a first polymer composition at a first temperature to form a housing molded over the insert and compression element;
• and
• cooling the housing from the first temperature,
• wherein the cooling compresses the compression element, relative to the equilibrium dimension of the compression element, between the housing and the distal end of the tapered insert,
• wherein the compression dissipates a significant portion of residual internal stress on the housing during the cooling that would otherwise be present without the compression element, and
• wherein the overmolded insert comprises a channel extending from an opening at a first end of the housing and into the tapered insert.
