## Abstract

A method and apparatus for decoding codes applied to objects for use with an image sensor that includes a two dimensional field of view (FOV), the method comprising the steps of providing a processor programmed to perform the steps of obtaining an image of the FOV and applying different decode algorithms to code candidates in the obtained image to attempt to decode the code candidates wherein the decode algorithm applied to each candidate is a function of the location of the code candidate in the FOV.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method for decoding codes applied to objects for use with an image sensor that includes a two dimensional field of view (FOV), the method comprising:
obtaining, using the image sensor, an image that includes a plurality of code candidates;
determining an order for the plurality of code candidates based on a distance from each code candidate of the plurality of code candidates to a point of interest at a position in the image;
attempting, based on the order, to decode a first code candidate of the plurality of code candidates that is closest to the point of interest using a decode algorithm;
attempting, based on the order, to decode a second code candidate of the plurality of code candidates that is next closest to the point of interest using the decode algorithm subsequent to attempting to decode the first code candidate.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, further comprising:
obtaining, using the image sensor, a second image that includes a second plurality of code candidates;
determining an order for the second plurality of code candidates based on a distance from each code candidate of the second plurality of code candidates to the point of interest at the position in the second image;
attempting, based on the order for the second plurality of code candidates, to decode a first code candidate of the second plurality of code candidates that is closest to the point of interest using the decode algorithm;
attempting, based on the order for the second plurality of code candidates, to decode a second code candidate of the second plurality of code candidates that is next closest to the point of interest using the decode algorithm subsequent to attempting to decode the first code candidate of the second plurality of code candidates.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The method of claim 2, further comprising:
attempting to decode the code candidates of the plurality of code candidates based on the order until an event occurs;
determining that the event occurred; and
in response to determining that the event occurred, discontinuing attempts to decode the code candidates of the plurality of code candidates.

### Claim 4 (depends on 3)

The method of claim 3, wherein the event corresponds to reception of the second image.

### Claim 5 (depends on 3)

The method of claim 3, wherein the event corresponds to a predetermined period of time expiring prior to reception of the second image.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the position of the point of interest corresponds to the center of the FOV.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, further comprising identifying the plurality of code candidates in the image.

### Claim 8 (depends on 7)

The method of claim 7, further comprising determining a relative distance between each of the plurality of code candidates and the point of interest, and
wherein the order for the plurality of code candidates is determined based on the relative distances of each of the plurality of code candidates.

### Claim 9

An apparatus for decoding codes applied to objects for use with an image sensor that includes a two dimensional field of view (FOV), the apparatus comprising:
an image sensor including a two dimensional field of view (FOV);
a processor linkable to the image sensor and programmed to perform the steps of:
obtaining, using the image sensor, an image that includes a plurality of code candidates;
determining an order for the plurality of code candidates based on a distance from each code candidate of the plurality of code candidates to a point of interest at a position in the image;
attempting, based on the order, to decode a first code candidate of the plurality of code candidates that is closest to the point of interest using a decode algorithm;
attempting, based on the order, to decode a second code candidate of the plurality of code candidates that is next closest to the point of interest using the decode algorithm subsequent to attempting to decode the first code candidate.

### Claim 10 (depends on 9)

The apparatus of claim 9, wherein the processor is further programmed to perform the steps of:
obtaining, using the image sensor, a second image that includes a second plurality of code candidates;
determining an order for the second plurality of code candidates based on a distance from each code candidate of the second plurality of code candidates to the point of interest at the position in the second image;
attempting, based on the order for the second plurality of code candidates, to decode a first code candidate of the second plurality of code candidates that is closest to the point of interest using the decode algorithm;
attempting, based on the order for the second plurality of code candidates, to decode a second code candidate of the second plurality of code candidates that is next closest to the point of interest using the decode algorithm subsequent to attempting to decode the first code candidate of the second plurality of code candidates.

### Claim 11 (depends on 10)

The apparatus of claim 10, wherein the processor is further programmed to perform the steps of:
attempting to decode the code candidates of the plurality of code candidates based on the order until an event occurs;
