## Abstract

An illumination panel including an optically transmissive, hollow multiwall structure and an array of LED strips distributed within a series of hollow chambers formed by the multiwall structure. The hollow multiwall structure is formed by two or more sheets of optically clear or translucent material joined by a plurality of transverse ribs. Each LED strip includes an array of interconnected light emitting diodes and is preferably provided with one or more light diffusing or beam-shaping elements included into one or more hollow chambers.

## Claims

### Claim 1

a plurality of transverse ribs joining the first and second sheets and defining a plurality of hollow chambers extending substantially parallel to each other;
a plurality of LED strips positioned within the plurality of hollow chambers, each of the LED strips including a plurality of light emitting diodes; and
a plurality of strips of a light diffusing material positioned within the plurality of hollow chambers and each disposed in energy receiving relationship with respect to at least one of the LED strips, wherein at least one of the plurality of strips of a light diffusing material is shaped in the form of a sleeve that is at least partially enclosing at least one of the plurality of LED strips.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The illumination panel of claim 1, wherein each of the first sheet, the second sheet, and the plurality of transverse ribs have optical transmittance between 50% and 90% in visible wavelengths.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The illumination panel of claim 1, wherein the plurality of transverse ribs forms an integral structure with at least one of the first and second sheets.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The illumination panel of claim 1, wherein the plurality of light emitting diodes is distributed over an extended area according to a two-dimensional pattern.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The illumination panel of claim 1, wherein the multiwall panel is configured to emit light from both the first and second sheets.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The illumination panel of claim 1, wherein said light diffusing material is of a reflective type.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The illumination panel of claim 1, wherein said light diffusing material is of a transmissive type.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The illumination panel of claim 1, wherein each of the strips of a light diffusing material is attached to one or more inner walls of the plurality of hollow chambers.

### Claim 9 (depends on 1)

The illumination panel of claim 1, wherein at least one of the plurality of strips of a light diffusing material has a cylindrical shape.

### Claim 10 (depends on 1)

The illumination panel of claim 1, wherein at least one of the plurality of strips of a light diffusing material comprises one or more folds.
