## Abstract

Certain embodiments are directed to methods and compositions for preventing treating bacterial infections. In certain embodiments the compositions comprise thioredoxin deficient bacteria.

## Claims

### Claim 1

An Acinetobacter baumanni mutant having a full or partial deletion in the thioredoxin-A (TrxA) gene that results in a non-functional TrxA gene.

### Claim 2

A vaccine comprising a live attenuated Acinetobacter baumanni, wherein the attenuated Acinetobacter baumanni is Acinetobacter baumanni having a full or partial deletion in the thioredoxin-A (TrxA) gene that results in a non-functional TrxA gene and induces an immune response to Acinetobacter baumanni in a subject in need thereof.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The vaccine of claim 2, wherein the subject is domesticated or a livestock animal.

### Claim 4 (depends on 2)

The vaccine of claim 2, wherein the vaccine is formulated for oral administration.

### Claim 5 (depends on 2)

The vaccine of claim 2, wherein the vaccine is formulated for vaccination against Acinetobacter baumanni.

### Claim 6

A method of inducing an immune response against Acinetobacter baumanni in a subject in need thereof comprising administering to said subject an effective dose of a live attenuated Acinetobacter baumanni, wherein the attenuated Acinetobacter baumanni is Acinetobacter baumanni having a full or partial deletion in the thioredoxin-A (TrxA) gene that results in a non-functional TrxA gene.

### Claim 7 (depends on 6)

The method of claim 6, wherein the attenuated Acinetobacter baumanni is administered orally.

### Claim 8 (depends on 6)

The method of claim 6, wherein the subject is domesticated or a livestock animal.
