## Abstract

An interspinous process device is configured for placement between adjacent spinous processes on a subject's spine. The device includes a housing configured for mounting to a first spinal process, the housing having a lead screw fixedly secured at one end thereof. A magnetic assembly is at least partially disposed within the housing and configured for mounting to a second spinal process. The magnetic assembly includes a hollow magnet configured for rotation within the magnetic assembly, the hollow magnet comprising a threaded insert configured to engage with the lead screw. An externally applied magnetic field rotates the hollow magnet in a first direction or a second, opposite direction. Rotation of the hollow magnet in the first direction causes telescopic movement of the magnetic assembly out of the housing (i.e., elongation) and rotation in the second direction causes telescopic movement of the magnetic assembly into the housing (i.e., shortening).

## Claims

### Claim 1

An interspinous process device configured for placement between adjacent spinous processes on a subject's spine comprising:
a housing comprising: a lead screw fixedly secured at one end thereof, a first mounting surface, and an upward facing hook pivotally coupled to the first mounting surface configured to configured to cradle a lower portion of a first spinous process, the upward facing hook configured to be pivoted between a low-profile configuration during insertion and a deployed configuration, and the upward facing hook having a stop configured to abut the first mounting surface to hold the upward facing hook static in the deployed configuration;
a magnetic assembly at least partially disposed within the housing, the magnetic assembly comprising:
a hollow magnet having a longitudinally extending bore defining an inner surface, the hollow magnet configured for rotation within the magnetic assembly, the hollow magnet comprising an internally threaded insert affixed to the inner surface of the bore, the internally threaded insert configured to coaxially engage with the lead screw; and
a downward facing hook pivotally coupled to a second mounting surface of the magnetic assembly, the downward facing hook configured to cradle an upper portion of a second spinous process, the downward facing hook configured to be pivoted between a low-profile configuration during insertion and a deployed configuration, and the downward facing hook having a stop configured to abut the second mounting surface to hold the downward facing hook static in the deployed configuration;
wherein an externally applied magnetic field rotates the hollow magnet, and wherein rotation of the hollow magnet in a first direction effectuates telescopic movement of the magnetic assembly out of the housing.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The interspinous process device of claim 1, wherein rotation of the hollow magnet in a second, opposite direction causes telescopic movement of the magnetic assembly into the housing.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The interspinous process device of claim 1, further comprising a seal disposed between the magnetic assembly and an internal surface of the housing.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The interspinous process device of claim 1, the magnetic assembly comprising a retaining cup configured to rotatably support the hollow magnet within the magnetic assembly.

### Claim 5 (depends on 4)

The interspinous process device of claim 4, further comprising a thrust bearing, wherein an end of the retaining cup is rotationally supported by the thrust bearing.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The interspinous process device of claim 1, wherein at least one of the one or more upward facing hook and the one or more downward facing hook are configured to pivot between a low profile configuration and a deployed configuration.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The interspinous process device of claim 1, further comprising an external adjustment device configured to apply an external, noninvasively applied magnetic field to the hollow magnet.

### Claim 8 (depends on 7)

The interspinous process device of claim 7, the external adjustment device comprising a feedback sensor configured to determine positional data of the magnetic assembly.

### Claim 9 (depends on 8)

The interspinous process device of claim 8, wherein the feedback sensor detects one or more of an acoustic signal, a radiation signal, or a magnetic signal.

### Claim 10 (depends on 1)

The interspinous process device of claim 1, further comprising at least one force feedback sensor.

### Claim 11

A method of adjusting the distance between adjacent spinous processes in a subject comprising:
affixing an interspinous process device to first and second spinous processes, the interspinous process device comprising a housing having an upward facing hook pivotally connected to a first mounting surface thereof configured for mounting to the first spinous process, configured to be pivoted between a low-profile configuration during insertion and a deployed configuration, and having a stop configured to abut the first mounting surface to hold the upward facing hook static in the deployed configuration, the housing comprising a lead screw fixedly secured at one end thereof, the interspinous device further comprising a magnetic assembly at least partially disposed within the housing having a downward facing hook pivotally connected to a second mounting surface thereof configured for mounting to the second spinous process, configured to be pivoted between a low-profile configuration during insertion and a deployed configuration, and the downward facing hook having a stop configured to abut the second mounting surface to hold the downward facing hook static in the deployed configuration the magnetic assembly comprising a hollow magnet having a longitudinally extending bore defining an inner surface, the hollow magnet configured for rotation within the magnetic assembly, the hollow magnet comprising an internally threaded insert affixed to the inner surface of the bore, the internally threaded insert configured to coaxially engage with the lead screw; and
applying a non-invasive external magnetic field to rotate the hollow magnet, wherein rotation of the hollow magnet in a first direction increases the distance between adjacent spinous processes.

### Claim 12 (depends on 11)

The method of claim 11, wherein rotation of the hollow magnet in a second direction decreases the distance between adjacent spinous processes.

### Claim 13 (depends on 11)
