Abstract
Systems and methods are provided for adaptive control of scanning by a communications device, such as a mobile handset, for an available communication network based on a status of the communications device, user behavior, and signal status. A new time interval used for scanning for communications networks and access points is calculated responsive to a detected change in condition.
Claims21
A method for determining a time interval for scanning for a communications network, the method comprising:
- determining, by a server, a first value of a condition of a communications device;
- detecting, by the server, a change in the condition of the communications device from the first value of the condition to a second value of the condition;
- selecting, by the server, a time interval modifier associated with the second value of the condition from a plurality of time interval modifiers, each of the plurality of time interval modifiers being associated with a different value of the condition;
- and
- adjusting, by the server, the time interval by the time interval modifier.
A server accessible by a service provider, the server comprising:
- a memory configured to store a plurality of time interval modifiers that are associated with a plurality of values of a condition of a communications device;
- and
- a processor configured to:
- determine a first value of the condition of the communications device,
- detect a change in the condition of the communications device from the first value of the condition to a second value of the condition,
- select a time interval modifier associated with the second value of the condition from a plurality of time interval modifiers, each of the plurality of time interval modifiers being associated with a different value of the condition;
- and
- adjust a time interval by the time interval modifier.
A server accessible by a service provider for determining a time interval for scanning for a communications network, the server comprising:
- a memory configured to store a plurality of time interval modifiers that are associated with a plurality of values of a condition of a communications device;
- and
- a processor configured to:
- determine a first value of the condition,
- detect a change in the condition of the communications device from the first value of the condition to a second value of the condition,
- adjust the time interval by a time interval modifier associated with the second value of the condition that is selected from a plurality of time interval modifiers when the second value of the condition crosses a threshold, each of the plurality of time interval modifiers being associated with a different value of the condition, and
- trigger a scan for the communications network in accordance with the adjusted time interval.
