History-aware selective pixel shifting

A method, comprising:

• accumulating pixel usage data for an organic light emitting diode (OLED) display;
• receiving image data for an image to be displayed;
• determining a pixel usage distribution for the image based on the image data;
• generating a pixel shifting pattern for the image based on the accumulated pixel usage data and the pixel usage distribution, the pixel shifting pattern to include a number of steps, each step specifying a location to display the image on the OLED display relative to a center of the image and a corresponding amount of time the image is to occupy the specified location, the amount of time based on a time weighted factor determined based in part on the accumulated pixel usage data and the pixel usage distribution, the time weighted factor for at least one of the steps to be set to zero to indicate the specified location for the at least one of the steps is to be skipped;
• applying the pixel shifting pattern to the image to generate modified image data;
• and
• outputting the modified image data for display.

At least one non-transitory machine readable medium comprising instructions that in response to being executed by a processor coupled to a display, cause the processor to:

• accumulate pixel usage data for the display;
• receive image data for an image to be displayed on the display;
• determine a pixel usage distribution for the image based on the image data;
• generate a pixel shifting pattern for the image based on the accumulated pixel usage data and the pixel usage distribution, the pixel shifting pattern to include a number of steps, each step specifying a location to display the image on the display relative to a center of the image and a corresponding amount of time the image is to occupy the specified location, the amount of time based on a time weighted factor determined based in part on the accumulated pixel usage data and the pixel usage distribution, the time weighted factor for at least one of the steps to be set to zero to indicate the specified location for the at least one of the steps is to be skipped;
• apply the pixel shifting pattern to the image to generate modified image data;
• and
• output the modified image data to the display.
