Rendering information into images

A computer system comprising:

• a memory;
• and
• one or more processors coupled to the memory, wherein the one or more processors are configured to execute program instructions stored in the memory to cause the one or more processors to:
• obtain an image that includes a plurality of pixels with a luminance range;
• determine a subtitle region to be displayed at a first set of pixels that correspond to a portion of the image, wherein the subtitle region comprises subtitle information that has a luminance value;
• perform tone mapping to reduce the luminance range for the first set of pixels to a target luminance range, wherein the luminance value of the subtitle information exceeds the target luminance range;
• and
• render the subtitle region to be displayed on a display device based on the tone mapping.

A computer implemented method for generating subtitles in an image, comprising

• accessing an image in a memory, wherein the image includes a plurality of pixels associated with a luminance range;
• generating a subtitle region to be display at a first set of pixels that correspond to a portion of the image, wherein the subtitle region comprises subtitle information that has a luminance value;
• reducing the luminance range for the first set of pixels to a target luminance range, wherein the luminance value of the subtitle information exceeds the target luminance range;
• and
• rendering the subtitle region to be displayed on a display device based on the target luminance range.
