Abstract
An in-plane switching (IPS) mode liquid crystal display (LCD) device includes a liquid crystal display panel having a first substrate, a second substrate, and a liquid crystal layer between the first and second substrates; a second polarizer on an outer surface of the second substrate, the second polarizer having a second polarizing element; and an in-cell retarder on an inner surface of the second substrate, wherein the in-cell retarder compensates a light leakage in a front direction of the liquid crystal display panel.

An in-plane switching (IPS) mode liquid crystal display (LCD) device, comprising:
- a liquid crystal display panel having a first substrate, a second substrate, and a liquid crystal layer between the a first and second substrates;
- a second polarizer on an outer surface of the second substrate, the second polarizer having a second polarizing element;
- an in-cell retarder on an inner surface of the second substrate, wherein the in-cell retarder compensates a light leakage in a front direction normal to the front surface of the liquid crystal display panel;
- an alignment layer directly on an inner surface of the second substrate, the in-cell retarder being directly on the alignment layer;
- and
- a first optical compensation film and a second optical compensation film between the second substrate and the second polarizing element,
- wherein the first optical compensation film directly contacts the second substrate and includes a positive biaxial film having nz>nx>ny,
- wherein nx, ny, nz are respective x-direction, y-direction, and z-direction refractive indexes in an x, y, z coordinate system, and
- wherein the second optical compensation film directly contacts the first optical compensation film and includes a negative biaxial film having nx>ny>nz.
