Abstract
The present invention relates to activated carbon sorbents including nitrogen. In various embodiments, the present invention provides an activated carbon sorbent including a halogen- or halide-promoted activated carbon, the activated carbon sorbent particles including nitrogen in a surface layer of the sorbent particles. In various embodiments, the present invention provides a method of reducing the pollutant content in a pollutant-containing gas using the activated carbon sorbent. In various embodiments, the activated carbon sorbent can remove mercury from a mercury-containing gas that includes sulfur(VI) such as SO3 more efficiently than other sorbents.
Claims19
A method of making promoted activated carbon sorbent particles comprising nitrogen in a surface layer thereof, the method comprising:
- combusting a mixture of coal and an added promoter precursor that comprises NaBr, to form a mercury-containing flue gas comprising a halogen- or halide-promoter that comprises Br−, HBr, or a combination thereof;
- and
- promoting an activated carbon sorbent particle in the mercury-containing flue gas with the halogen- or halide-promoter, to form the promoted activated carbon sorbent particles comprising nitrogen in a surface layer thereof, the concentration of nitrogen in the surface layer being higher than the concentration of nitrogen in a core of the sorbent particles, the core of the sorbent particles comprising nitrogen, wherein the nitrogen is derived from an ammonium salt comprising ammonium sulfate.
A method of making promoted activated carbon sorbent particles comprising nitrogen in a surface layer thereof, the method comprising:
- combusting a mixture of coal and an added promoter precursor that comprises NaBr, to form a mercury-containing flue gas comprising a halogen- or halide-promoter that comprises Br−, HBr, or a combination thereof;
- injecting ammonium sulfate and activated carbon sorbent particles together or separately into the mercury-containing flue gas;
- and
- promoting the activated carbon sorbent particles in the mercury-containing flue gas with the halogen- or halide-promoter, to form the promoted activated carbon sorbent particles comprising nitrogen in a surface layer thereof, the concentration of nitrogen in the surface layer being higher than the concentration of nitrogen in a core of the sorbent particles, the core of the sorbent particles comprising nitrogen, wherein the nitrogen is derived from the ammonium sulfate.
